Curriculum Specialist: The Physics of Engineering

General Summary/Purpose of the job:

Produce a course binder for CTY's The Physics of Engineering course as specified in work-for-hire agreement.


Note: This position is not beneftis eligible.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Produce a complete curriculum for CTY's The Physics of Engineering, a three-week (75+ contact hours) course for academically talented students as specified in work-for-hire agreement.
  • Include all necessary handouts, lecture notes, worksheets, etc. (with complete bibliographic information) that a CTY summer instructor would need to teach each lesson in his or her course.
  • Include specific instructions for how the instructor should set up an activity, how much time a certain lecture or group work should take, and how best to incorporate the TA, etc.
  • Identify any materials to which copyright or other rights are owned, including the name of the owner and source of the materials. Additional expectations are specified in the work-for-hire agreement.

Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of course subject
  • Knowledge of pedagogy appropriate for CTY students

Minimum Required Education and Related Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Science
  • At least three years of full-time teaching middle school or high school.
  • In-depth knowledge of specific course subject.
  • Knowledge of pedagogical approaches applicable to a variety of skill sets and learning styles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree highly preferred.

Degree of Independent Action Performed on the Job:

  • Expectations for end product are specified in work-for-hire agreement.
  • Position works independently on the first draft of the curriculum binder.
  • Position revises subsequent drafts as requested by supervisor.

Internal and external contacts required as part of the job:

  • Infrequent contact with CTY Assistant Directors, Program Managers, or Assistant Program Managers.

Computer or other special needs for the position:

  • Must have access to a computer and be computer literate.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word.


Machines and/or equipment used on the job, include % of time used:

  • Computer, 100%


Physical requirements for the job:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and email with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.

  • This is a work-for-hire position of limited scope and duration.  Expectations for end product are specified in work-for-hire agreement.
  • Position works independently on the first draft of the curriculum binder and revises subsequent drafts as requested by supervisor.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the US, and must either live in the US or another area in which JHU has a business entity.
  • All employees participating in or serving children in University programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect, and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
