Data Manager

The Center for Clinical Trials and Evidence Synthesis is seeking a Data Manager to support research for its Data Coordinating Center (DCC). Under the direction of the Principal Investigators, the incumbent will be responsible for participating in the planning and execution of data management activities that support the overall work of and research studies within the Center. This position provides expert level design and development services such as databases, website interfaces, data collection forms, quality control analyses, and data dictionary development. Additional responsibilities include interfacing related databases and database transfers (e.g., to outside investigators or data repositories).


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow best practices for data management and maintaining data in a secure environment.
  • Create (design, build, and test) electronic data capture (e.g., REDCap) databases for studies within the Center and then manage and update the study databases prospectively.
  • Manage and update study databases prospectively.
  • Develop and maintain a library of case report forms and data dictionaries for electronic data capture to support multiple research protocols for randomized clinical trials and cohort studies.
  • Create and oversee quality control procedures for data collection/analysis including written reports and data quality queries.
  • Import, clean, integrated data from multiple sources (e.g., REDCap, electronic monitoring (actigraphy, spirometry), database maintained at outside institutions).
  • Work collaboratively with data analysts/study coordinators/staff.
  • Develop standard analytical summary data files, produce descriptive reports, including tables and graphs.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, training modules, and documentation as needed and provide training for study personnel on performing data entry and running reports.
  • Outstanding writing and inter-personal communication skills, ability to interact and impart information clearly to an audience with varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently to handle organize and prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Must be organized and detail oriented.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Programming, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, Life Sciences, Health Sciences, or closely related field desired.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Strong computer skills to include familiarity with PCs and common software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Good communications skills, including excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well with others to solve problems.
  • Ability to prioritize own work and work of others as needed.
  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
