General Description:

The Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a motivated individual to head the department's Design Studio (DS). This position involves managing a state-of-the-art biomedical design space and mentoring student teams to design, build, and test healthcare technologies.  The BME DS is a multi-purpose facility that is used for various BME classes, meetings, workshops, and events, and primarily for design teams involving graduate and undergraduate students. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Facilities Management
    1. Operate the DS facilities and resources, managing both the use of space and equipment. Facilities include the main studio, machine shop, prototyping lab and wet lab
    2. Develop procedures, schedules and checklists for efficient and safe use of equipment
    3. Continuously improve the DS and its resources by identifying needed updates
    4. Develop new tools to expedite organizational operations
    5. Collaborate with BME financial staff in the review and tracking of expenditure activity on design team budget accounts
    6. Maintain the DS web calendar up to date to manage resources efficiently
  2. Educational and Instructional Development
    1. Work with faculty in educating the next generation of leaders in healthcare
    2. Provide subject matter expertise and conduct research and development for the Design Program
    3. Serve as design, prototyping and testing mentor for undergraduate design teams. Specifically, guide their strategic project planning, assist in prototyping medical devices, create proof-of-concept experiment protocols, and facilitate the continuation of projects beyond the course through start-up competitions entries, IP creation, and securing grant funding
    4. Provide technical assistance and training to students including the development of technical workshops
    5. Participate and represent the Design program at conferences, symposia and presentations of research and Design Program projects
    6. Training students in lab safety
    7. Assist with planning and submitting applications for human subjects testing and animal testing
    8. Contribute to the development and execution of new design curriculum, working closely with faculty and staff associated with classes and programs using the DS to integrate new equipment, procedures, or methods
  3. Supervision
    1. Develop and maintain teaching assistant staffing plans
    2. Provide teaching assistants with necessary training
    3. Oversee technical staff in ensuring the appropriate functioning of all equipment in the teaching laboratories
    4. Manage the workload of project teams and provide guidance and feedback on their performance – help allocate the time of team members efficiently

Required Qualifications:

  • BS plus 5 years Exp, OR MS plus 3 years Exp, OR PhD plus 0 years Exp
  • Hands-on technical building, prototyping, testing, or design experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated successful teaching related courses or workshops.
  • Those with machine shop, rapid prototyping, wet lab and engineering design process experience, are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Creative thinking, independent judgment and critical analysis necessary for implementation of new equipment and procedures
  • Demonstrated strong management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated initiative to meet competing deadlines and manage multiple activities
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff
  • Ability to develop instructional display materials, and to assist in the production of AV aids for teaching laboratories
  • Knowledge of the University organizational structure and administrative policies and procedures such as accounting, contracts and grants, personnel and purchasing
  • Knowledge of processes, regulations and policies for the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) and the Human Subjects Research Protocols.
  • Knowledge of the safety and Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) procedures, processes, regulations and policies.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
