General summary/purpose:

The Digital Communications Specialist will be a key position on the staff of Jhpiego, a Johns Hopkins University affiliate, which serves as the Secretariat for AlignMNH, a five-year project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The main purpose of AlignMNH is to align global maternal and newborn health (MNH) advocacy, metrics, financing and action in support of accelerated improvements in MNH and well-being in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).  

 

The Digital Communications Specialist will promote and enhance the exchange of maternal and newborn health technical knowledge through engagement across multiple AlignMNH channels, including an online knowledge hub, a series of global conferences and virtual engagement convenings, and digital communications efforts. The position is responsible for supporting the development of digital communications across the AlignMNH initiative, with the design and implementation of strategies and digital knowledge products that reach audiences where they are, with the evidence, resources and tools they need and in formats that encouraging learning and action to improve uptake of best practices in MNH.  This position will drive the creation and development of digital assets for use on all AlignMNH platforms, including social media and the website; assist in the upload and maintenance of digital collateral; and support overall messaging and brand identity, including the execution of a digital communications strategy and supporting the bi-annual international conference series (International Maternal Newborn Health Conference) taking place in May 2023.

 

 

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Contribute to an integration strategy cross the initiative in developing digital knowledge and communications products that reach audiences with resources and tools in formats that encouraging learning and action
  • Creatively deploy content across a range of platforms, from the website to social media, with a focus on building unique, compelling content fully adapted to each individual platform
  • Assist in the creative direction of campaigns, including identifying, sourcing and utilizing the multimedia assets required to accelerate knowledge sharing and reach audiences with the right information at the right time
  • Work with Senior Communications Specialist and other team members to effectively and strategically plan and execute dissemination campaigns
  • Regularly update site content as well as design/develop new landing pages
  • Manage upload of publications, technical knowledge products, resources, collections, and conference/convenings collateral to the site
  • Create templates and optimize graphics for website and email campaigns
  • Support the creation of a multitude of multimedia and digital assets, including podcasts, videos, photo essays, infographics, and social media shareables
  • Support the development of overall messaging and brand identity for AlignMNH and the creation and execution of a digital communications strategy to accompany technical products (original and curated)
  • Contribute to social media integrated communications strategy across all platforms to include daily management of AlignMNH social and digital media channels on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube
  • Support the promotion of virtual engagement series and other convenings through partner engagement toolkits, e-blasts, targeted stakeholder outreach and audience segmentation, and other digital promotion strategies.
  • Support the Senior Communications Specialist in crafting and executing social media campaigns for digital advocacy days, events, and other promotional activities
  • Actively stay up-to-date and increase knowledge of latest platforms, practices, standards in digital and social media, best practices and ensuring goals are met in changing digital environment
  • Examine and analyze website and social media traffic and engagement to build systems and protocols that ensure all content is optimized across all platforms and user experiences
  • Explore additional digital communications platforms to reach audiences where they are with the right information i.e. Whatsapp, LinkedIn, Instagram.
  • Assist in conceptualizing and designing digital collateral to include social media graphics and banners, infographics, icons, toolkits, etc.
  • Utilize Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to enhance the visual appeal of AlignMNH’s work and the work of partners in the maternal and newborn health communities
  • Support implementation of the AlignMNH Strategic Roadmap across the initiative to prioritize digital content, engagement activities, campaigns, etc.
  • Support routine project communications, dissemination, and outreach
  • Provide surge support as needed, assisting with a variety of other communications and AlignMNH tasks

 

 

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

 

  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience using WordPress, Content Management Systems and other social, digital, media, and design platforms (Mailchimp, Canva)
  • Strong working knowledge and experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Experience with web protocols such as CSS, HTML
  • Working knowledge of web analytics tools
  • Thorough understanding of the graphic and functional aspects of web design and usability
  • High degree of decision making and problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to work with both scientific/technical (e.g. technical program briefs) and non-technical (e.g. marketing) materials
  • Ability to project a professional image and communicate positively and effectively as a representative of Jhpiego, both within The Johns Hopkins University community and external organizations and donors
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 20%
