Digital Specialist

General Summary/Purpose
The Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) seeks a versatile Digital Specialist with web capabilities and excellent communications skills to assist staff in use of web-based technologies, contribute to the maintenance of existing websites and databases and help troubleshoot software for various CCP-led projects.


The Digital Specialist should learn, use, and help staff on communication and collaboration platforms by proactively sharing tips and responding to requests for assistance. The Digital Specialist will also provide support to the Center’s program monitoring platform by updating web-based content, as well as through database and vendor management.


The successful candidate will assist in creating user experiences and design interfaces for new and existing sites as well as other interactive mediums. The Digital Specialist will work with team members to both implement and suggest/test new ways to use web technologies while enforcing and maintaining web and branding standards. The Digital Specialist must be able to manage and meet assigned project and task schedules.


The Digital Specialist will maintain and/or redesign web pages to include look and feel, and content to include reviewing and editing website content, and will sometimes liaise with external vendors for new functionality. Specialist will also support writing, editing and research activities. Additional duties include providing technical support/troubleshooting user issues, drafting and editing web reports and developing creative visual content to communicate key results. Other general support may be required as needed. The Digital Specialist reports directly to the Director of Digital Strategy.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Testing and maintaining websites and web-based content that enrich and optimize the exchange of information and produce effective communications

  • Interacting with team to gather and define requirements
  • Work with director in analyzing requirements to determine the most effective solutions
  • Coordinating creation and collection of necessary technology components and integrate them into a coherent design
  • Working with external software (third party) vendors 
  • Make recommendations regarding web traffic data analysis and reporting (Google Analytics)
  • Database management, some familiarity with constituent relationship management (CRMs) systems
  • Research best practices in web design and content delivery and make recommendations
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field.

Two (2) years related experience.



Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *


Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years’ related experience required, including experience managing and administrating customer-facing web content management systems (CMS)

  • Experience in web design, editing, writing, and content management using various software programs preferred



Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience with WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud

  • Ability to produce digital content quickly and accurately
  • Experience with Google Analytics and search engine optimization
  • Experience in database management
  • Assists with digital metadata creation, transformation, and maintenance including quality control
  • Ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.

Starting Salary Range: $43,530 - $59,795 /Commensurate with Experience

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
