General Summary/Purpose

The Director of Business Development is accountable for the delivery of assigned medium to high complex projects within scope, timeline, budget, and aligned with the expectations of key project stakeholders and/or customers. 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple capital/site projects through stage-gating process per the capital steering committee and capital project playbook and/or site scorecard process.
  • Assemble and lead project core teams to develop:  project scope, schedule, budgets, cash curves, risks, change management and communication plans.
  • Collaborate with the project sponsor and key stakeholders to develop the project scope and charter and ensure that projects deliver the expected business cases.
  • Work with Leadership and change management, functional management, sponsors and governance teams to resolve and/or escalate conflicts and issues between projects and/or project teams.
  • Monitor and control projects, to ensure project timelines are delivered on time, by utilizing critical path methodology (CPM) and PM tools.
  • Present to project steering committees, site scorecard meetings and/or capital steering committees, as required.
  • Submit monthly project status reports/dashboards, as required.
  • Leverage current risk management tools and techniques to identify, mitigate and manage project risks.
  • Ensure project team cohesion, effectiveness and collaboration to ensure project remains within scope and schedule.
  • Remove issues, conflicts, and bottlenecks, as required, to ensure project scope and timelines are adhered to.
  • Communicate and/or cascade key project information to key stakeholders, sponsors and/or site on project impact and/or status.
  • Understand and manages key integration points, with other projects and efforts, within the site(s).
  • Contribute to the maturation of project management capabilities at the site through lessons learned, enhancements to the capital project playbook, and additions to the PM knowledgebase.
  • Perform capital project on-site walk-throughs to ensure project execution is performed safely and within scope parameters, as required.
  • Ensures administrative and financial closure of assigned site/capital projects.
  • Other tasks, as assigned.
  • Must be comfortable wearing personnel PPE (hard hats, steel toe shoes, safety glasses and vests) as project work dictates.


Specific Skill Sets preferred:

  • Knowledge of cGMP facility requirements for initial buildout infrastructure and facility validations.
  • Knowledge of current federal guidelines, FDA regulations, CMO requirements, BioPharma manufacturing compliance requirements, space design for GCP, GTP, GMP and QC Testing (IDTF).
  • Understanding the staffing needs for initial start-up, management of employee relations, management development and training qualifications, manufacturing and product testing operations.
  • Knowledge of industry-level facility procedures for environmental monitoring, cleanroom suite operations, equipment operations, clinical manufacturing suites and quality systems.




Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Ph.D in Life or Physical Sciences or an MBA with an undergraduate degree in Life or Physical sciences required. 

  • Seven (7) years of business development experience in industry pharmaceutical/biotech required.



Preferred Qualifications

Other advanced degrees or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.



Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Biologics Manufacturing or BioPharma experience desirable.

  • Ability to apply expertise as a project manager within the Pharma industry to successfully implement and manage projects.
  • Understanding of GMP facility infrastructure requirements is highly desirable
  • A self-starter and team player with the ability to work closely with stakeholders to develop programs targeted towards faculty, inventors, staff, and industry partners.
  • Must have an excellent, professional rapport, exceptional oral and written communication skills and a strong customer service orientation.
  • Must build collegial relationships and gain trust through expert work and clear management.
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, and have the ability to perform and manage multiple projects at a time.
  • Must be deadline-driven and able to handle flexible hours, including some weeknight work for hosting events or dinners.
  • Must be able to deal tactfully and professionally with others in stressful situations.
  • Must be able to work competently with Microsoft Office and other desktop applications. Experience with Salesforce, or other CRM systems is a plus.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
