Director Concert Operations

Position Summary:

Provides strategic direction and leads all aspects of the Peabody Institute’s concert activities. The Director of Concert Operations oversees all administrative functions of the Peabody Conservatory and Preparatory ensemble programs with the goal of providing students with top-tier ensemble training and professional-level performance experiences. These responsibilities include providing leadership to the employees of the ensemble, concert office, production and the Peabody Box Office; and managing all aspects of the school’s performance venues and various other performance and rehearsal spaces within the school. The Director interacts regularly with members of the general public, external donors and clients, and Peabody Conservatory and Preparatory faculty, staff and students. The position reports to the Senior Associate Dean of Institute Studies at the Peabody Institute and is a member of the Senior Associate Dean’s administrative leadership team.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Oversee staff devoted to supporting the artistic and educational development of students which includes the management of the Ensembles Office, the Concert Office, the Box Office, and Production Services.  
  • Coordinates in collaboration with conservatory and preparatory artistic staff the planning of all concerts and dance performances including concert and rehearsal scheduling, guest artist engagement/contracting, and programming.
  • Develops and manages budgets including, projected contributed revenue, special events and hall availability and all concert operations budgets.
  • Collaborates Peabody Marketing office to design and produce the season brochure, concert marketing campaigns and other publications as needed
  • Works closely with Artistic Director Ensembles and conducting faculty to administer conducting program and the Conductors Orchestra.
  • As the teacher of record, provides advisement, assesses performance, tracks ensemble assignments, and assigns grades for students enrolled in conservatory large ensembles
  • Liaises with other departments about cross-departmental collaborations, including regular opera and dance performances, as well as special events with Historical Performance, Jazz and other performance events.
  • Oversees and serves in rotation of staffing for all concert events
  • Acts as liaison with guest conductors and their management, communications office, and concert office
  • Engages with assistant and preparatory conductors for concert projects as needed
  • Executes special projects such as recordings or institute wide performances as needed

  • Bachelor’s Degree in music performance, history, education or related field required; advanced degree (M.M., M.A. or higher) preferred
  • 10 years of orchestral administration and management or related experience required.
  • Extensive knowledge of orchestral, operatic, choral and/or dance repertoire
  • Experience in management and tracking of complex departmental budgets
  • Exceptional communication, organizational and management skills
  • Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, Access and Outlook. Experience with Arts Vision is preferred.
  • Previous administrative or faculty experience at performing arts conservatory or university music program preferred
  • Previous experience in the management of orchestral programs at an educational institution preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
