Director Corporate Partnerships

 

General Summary/Purpose:

The Director of Business Development cultivates faculty-industry partnerships that advance discovery at Johns Hopkins. Reporting to the Senior Director for Corporate Partnerships, this business development and marketing position independently performs a variety of activities intended to promote Johns Hopkins University (JHU) inventors and their research expertise, the Johns Hopkins Office of Technology Ventures (JHTV), and Johns Hopkins University.  This position requires a deep understanding of bench science and solid experience in facilitating industry agreements, --which includes sourcing, shaping, closing and managing large deals with industry partners. The position requires the ability understand the strengths of Hopkins scientists and to market this expertise to develop and grow large scale industry collaborations.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identifies potential industry partners and acts as a front door for the industry partner into Hopkins. Initiates and coordinates industry engagement including visits by industry representatives to JHU to meet with faculty inventors, senior staff, and Hopkins leadership, as well as organizing JHU leadership, faculty, and senior staff to visit industry partners to explore opportunities for future or expanded collaboration.  
  • Trains faculty to present their inventions to potential investors.  
  • Provides state-of-the- art education and insights into current technology landscape for faculty in order to optimize successful commercialization of complex university inventions
  • Negotiates agreement terms, with advisement from the Office of Research Administration and other Johns Hopkins departments, as needed, to ensure acceptable terms that protect the Principal Investigators and the University.
  • Takes a leadership role in coordinating all aspects of deal negotiation and oversees deal from identification through closure stage.
  • May oversee management of large scale industry partnerships by an alliance manager which includes a number of faculty projects.
  • Manages ongoing relationships with the industry partners at a high level, and works with alliance managers to communicate reporting milestones and other progress.
  • Oversees alliance managers facilitating day-to-day management of the needs of the faculty involved in the collaboration. This will include facilitating new relationships for that partner as well as winding down projects that do not meet milestones and identifying new industry partners for those projects.
  • Establishes and maintains strategic contacts in industry, including pharmaceutical, biotech, health care IT, physical science, and medical device companies.  
  • Develops creative new methods for engaging industry partners.  Contributes to industry contact database to be used by JHTV for push and pull marketing efforts and general communications.
  • Implements an educational program for JHTV senior staff and Hopkins faculty about industry specific specialty funding programs. This requires in-depth understanding of entrepreneurial financing and the needs of business partners with the ability to follow and track changes over time.
  • Coordinates with Technology Analysts to prepare and pitch specific JHU technologies that are in-line with industry funding programs.
  • Develops a marketing strategy to communicate funding program deadlines to faculty and plan informational events about financing program opportunities for Johns Hopkins faculty and inventors.
  • Works closely with the JHTV Marketing team and participates in developing events at conferences to attract and retain industry partners.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Ventures to host events for venture capital investors and others from the investment industry with select faculty technologies in their areas of interest.
  • Works with Director of Ventures to maintain relationships with potential investors and pitch new technologies on an ongoing basis.
  • Must understand and closely follow trends in venture capital investing to help facilitate introductions to appropriate faculty inventors.
  • Creates and maintains industry engagement reporting including, but not limited to, measurable accomplishments and budget projections through the use of university specific databases

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • PhD in life or physical sciences or an MBA with an undergraduate degree in life or physical sciences required.  
  • Seven (7) years of business development experience in industry required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Other advanced degrees or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • A self-starter and team player with the ability to work closely with JHTV leadership team to develop programs targeted towards faculty, inventors, staff, and industry partners.
  • Must have an excellent, professional rapport, exceptional oral and written communication skills and a strong customer service orientation. 
  • Must build collegial relationships and gain trust through expert work and clear management.
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, and have the ability to perform and manage multiple projects at a time. 
  • Must be deadline-driven and able to handle flexible hours, including some weeknight work for hosting events or dinners.
  • Must be able to deal tactfully and professionally with others in stressful situations. 
  • Must be able to work competently with Microsoft Office and other desktop applications. Experience with Salesforce, or other CRM systems is a plus.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
