General Description

The Director of Innovation Initiatives and Corporate Relations will develop and execute a university-wide strategy that will identify and prioritize opportunities for engagement along the entire revenue spectrum – from outright, unrestricted philanthropic support to direct investment in JHU start-ups and blended opportunities in between.   In this role, the Director will have responsibility for engaging with corporations, family offices, investors, entrepreneurs, and other partners to support the University’s capital raising efforts in support of innovation and entrepreneurship.  The Director will lead and manage all philanthropic and hybrid fundraising efforts for Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures while supporting the broader corporate fundraising program for central Development and Alumni Relations. 


Areas of Responsibility:

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures

Plan, manage and coordinate the overall institutional fundraising strategies of $20M over five years ($6 million for space, $10 million for seed funding, and $4 million for programs). 

More specifically, research, identify, organize, and coordinate the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of an overall prospect portfolio, which will include individuals, corporations, foundations, venture philanthropists and principal gift prospects.

The efforts at JHTV will not be limited just to philanthropic commitments but will also include identifying external partners, investors, and others in the broader Hopkins network whose business interests are aligned with JHTV’s work. 

Serve as a point of contact within Development and Alumni Relations for corporate and innovation fundraising, prospect management, and clearance.  Coordinate presidential, dean, faculty, and other senior leaders’ time relating to fundraising in this nature.

Support the Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures team and the Corporate Relations team in building a network of entrepreneurs and industry contacts to help faculty and students commercialize technology.  Structure this engagement in a way that complements the long-term engagement, cultivation, and stewardship strategies for existing prospects and supporters of Development and Alumni Relations.  Work closely with the individual schools of the university and department of medicine to research and engage entrepreneurial alumni who are potential mentors, investors or future philanthropic prospects for the University writ large. 

Manage, cultivate, and grow the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Advisory Board for Johns Hopkins University.


Corporate Engagement, Fundraising and Investment

Manage and direct Corporate Fundraising for central Development and Alumni Relations.

Develop and manage a small number of relationships with companies that impact more than one school/division and that have business interests that align with areas of research, education, and service in which Johns Hopkins has a competitive advantage and manage the associated philanthropic, contractual, and investment opportunities.

Serve as a consultant and advisor to Development and Alumni Relations colleagues across the institution as they explore and evaluate corporate funding opportunities and programs, including advising on corporate/corporate foundation funding opportunities and developing new strategies to attract corporate sponsors for our innovation hubs.

Build and expand relationships with companies where Hopkins has significant professional and research connections and a strong alumni presence. These relationships will not always be philanthropically focused but the goal should be to drive new revenue to the university.

Develop a sophisticated and innovative set of metrics and reports for Corporate Relations that will present philanthropic progress, as well as overall “corporate investment” in the University, including contributions other than traditional philanthropy – contracts, equipment, internships, etc.

Build and coordinate a network of Hopkins colleagues responsible for corporate relationships to share information and explore cross-divisional opportunities. Serve as a point of contact for the Senior Adviser to the President for Enterprise Development for Johns Hopkins University.


Venture Philanthropy and Impact Investing

Develop a deep understanding of and strategy around “venture philanthropy” and “impact investment” space, which is often characterized as investments that are made with specific social outcomes in mind and can be achieved through philanthropy, direct investment or a combination of both.  Often times, these gifts will be made with the intention of moving a research project or technology from an idea to a commercially viable and investable startup venture.  Working in this emerging space requires a nuanced understanding of the languages of entrepreneurship and venture investing and a great deal of creativity.   

Examples include:  LLCs with philanthropic agenda (Chan Zuckerberg Initiative), evergreen translational philanthropic funds (Thalheimer Fund), gifts and pledges of company equity, and foundations that make investment with a potential financial or social outcome return in mind (F.B. Heron Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Vertex Pharmaceuticals).



Bachelor’s degree required.  Seven years related experience with demonstrated effectiveness in building high-level relationships, working with corporations, investors, and other entities to secure financial commitments. 

Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to lead colleagues at all levels of an organization and work across the institution. 

High levels of creativity, initiative, resourcefulness, and motivation.

Ability to work with senior university leadership and manage an active advisory board.

Ability and willingness to travel.  A strong desire to associate with Johns Hopkins University and to champion the values of the institution.

Knowledge of intellectual property, licensing, and conflict of interest issues related to corporate support, and startup culture.

A passion for developing the innovation ecosystem of Johns Hopkins University and Baltimore more broadly.

The position will report to a University Associate Vice President and serve as a point of contact for the Senior Adviser to the President for Enterprise Development, and will be located and supported in the San Martin Center on the Homewood Campus.
