Director of Student Affairs


Position Summary

The Director of Student Affairs directs and oversees activities and initiatives that support and enhance the student experience for undergraduate and graduate students at the Peabody Conservatory. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Enrollment & Student Life, the Director of Student Affairs maintains a visible presence in the Conservatory as a resource and leader, building strong relationships and engagement across diverse student populations, ensuring a high standard of customer service, and collaborating with partners across the Conservatory and with Homewood to develop student support services, creating and sustaining an environment that is inclusive, supportive, collaborative, and that empowers students to achieve their personal and professional goals.


The Director of Student Affairs oversees student leadership and engagement, residential life, and student conduct, and provides crisis and emergency leadership and response on issues related to students. The position oversees four direct reports, including the Associate Director for Residence Life,

Assistant Director for Student Engagement, Student Case Manager, and Student Affairs Coordinator.


Essential Job Duties

  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of policies pertaining to student life, including residential life and student conduct
  • Create a culture in the Office of Student Affairs that is welcoming, inclusive, and operates according to the highest standards of customer service, working with and empowering students to resolve issues proactively while giving students tools to be successful
  • Mentor and oversee the work of the Student Affairs staff, and develop the individual and collective talents of the team to ensure a high level of effectiveness, while inspiring colleagues with energy and dedication to Peabody’s mission, the work of the office, and their own professional development
  • Lead efforts to support community building and student engagement, partnering with the Peabody General Assembly and other student organizations to develop programming that brings together students from different backgrounds, enriches social life on and off campus, and stimulates campus discourse on important issues
  • Oversee and collaborate with campus partners in the planning and implementation of New Student Orientation and related activities, ensuring comprehensive and successful on-boarding for all new Peabody and Double Degree students each year
  • Chair the SACC (Student Assistance Coordinating Committee), and work collaboratively with Academic Affairs, and other partners to support student success and persistence, taking a lead role in advancing efforts to support an increasingly diverse student population
  • Serve as Chief Judicial officer for student conduct issues and violations in collaboration with the JHU Office of Student Conduct
  • Coordinate health services with the JHU Health and Wellness Center and JHU Counseling Center
  • Collaborate in the management of dining services, taking the lead on issues pertaining to the student experience and accommodations
  • Serve on committees as appropriate, both at Peabody and at Homewood
  • Oversee a budget of approximately $1 million
  • Collaborate with other offices at Peabody that impact the student experience such as LaunchPAD, and the Johns Hopkins Rehabilitation Network Clinic for Performing Artists to ensure coordinated approaches and programming
  • Serve as an active and contributing member of the larger Enrollment & Student Life team, which includes the Director of Admissions, Director of Financial Aid, and Registrar.


Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Five years of administrative experience in student affairs, residence life, or student engagement within an institution of higher education, with at least two years of supervisory experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a highly collaborative and communicative style
  • Knowledge and understanding of current and emerging trends relating to student success and best practices in student affairs
  • Ability to manage through crises and stressful situations with discretion and sensitivity
  • A demonstrated commitment to and experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusivity


Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a music school/conservatory setting, or similarly specialized setting in higher education
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team of professionals

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
