Donor and Volunteer Engagement at Johns Hopkins University

Background:

The Office of Donor and Volunteer Engagement (DVE) seeks to engage, steward and recognize Johns Hopkins’ leadership volunteers and major donors according to their interests, through meaningful activities that encourage and recognize their long-term support of the institution and the positive impact of their involvement and philanthropy. Developing and maintaining a community of engaged leadership volunteers and donors is vital to the university and the success of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). DVE supports the engagement, stewardship and recognition of volunteers and donors across the institution at both the divisional level and as a central services bureau.

Additionally, the Office collaborates with a wide range of colleagues across the Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine. The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Campaign Operations and Engagement and works closely with university and faculty leaders, and colleagues across DAR.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Staff Leadership and Strategic Planning

 

  • Provide leadership in the identification and implementation of strategies and priority programming that will increase leadership volunteer engagement and giving.
  • Lead a team of three FTEs (including the Director) responsible for the engagement of leadership volunteers (includes managing and mentoring a team, staff recruitment, orientation, goal setting and annual performance review).
  • Manage all activities and opportunities related to institutional engagement of volunteers, including liaison with central DAR and Johns Hopkins University and Medicine development and alumni offices.
  • Collaborate with the offices of the President, the Vice President for Development, the Board of Trustees, and Principal Gifts to ensure the highest quality engagement and stewardship of university trustees.

 

Volunteer Engagement

 

  • Champion the important role that Johns Hopkins leadership volunteers play by regularly informing the Johns Hopkins community, DAR Executive Team and/or other university leaders of best practices, success stories, and relevant national or institutional statistics.
  • Advise divisional offices regarding best practices in volunteer recruitment, orientation, on-going education, involvement and recognition.
  • Establish a systematic and ongoing approach to identify and prioritize volunteer leadership opportunities, and ensuring that volunteers are involved in fundraising and other activities on behalf of JHU.
  • Work closely with development teams to establish a systematic and ongoing approach to identify and evaluate volunteers.
  • Develop and oversee a central training program for volunteers (to include an orientation for new advisory council members and other volunteers).
  • Develop and maintain volunteer management guidelines that are consistent with JHU prospect management guidelines and, where appropriate, policies for volunteer roles and activities such as advocacy and solicitation.
  • Oversee the biennial Leadership Summit (October of 2020 is the next scheduled summit), working closely with DAR Special Events.
  • Working closely with DAR Communications, develop a comprehensive communications plan to keep volunteers engaged with campaign progress and volunteer news/opportunities.
  • Oversee a communications program for the trustees that includes voluntary stewardship calls and/or emails to thank new major gift donors on behalf of JHU.
  • Working in conjunction with DAR Executive Team and Management Team, develop, implement and monitor DAR policies and procedures related to the management and engagement of volunteers.

 

Operations

 

  • Develop and maintain volunteer management reporting and metrics within ALADIN, including the RMS module.
  • Develop and monitor an annual budget for Volunteer Engagement and the biennial Volunteer Leadership Summit.
  • Keep apprised of best practices in other similar organizations.
  • Attend/speak at internal and external conferences and training sessions, as appropriate.
  • Partner closely with the Director of Stewardship to ensure that the overall Donor and Volunteer Engagement team is operating effectively and efficiently.
  • Work closely with the Stewardship, Special Events, and Development Communications teams and meet monthly with the Directors of these areas and the Associate VP for Campaign Operations and Engagement on strategy, programs and special projects.
  • When Johns Hopkins University is in a major fundraising campaign, be prepared to operate in a campaign environment and engage with volunteers as needed.  Additional campaign volunteer structures will be formed and this position will be responsible for creating, staffing and maintaining these working groups.

 

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Bachelor’s degree and seven to ten years of related experience.

 

Expertise in the following is required:

  • Strategic planning: developing and implementing strategies for volunteer engagement including philanthropy
  • Evaluation:  identifying and achieving measures of success
  • Raising funds for a non-profit institution, preferably in higher education
  • Managing volunteer groups effectively including advisory boards and councils
  • Recruiting, managing and growing talented staff
  • Fostering collaboration and building partnerships across divisions and with university leadership and administration
  • Working with an institution’s highest level of volunteer and donor leadership – communications, presentations, etc.
  • Ability to function effectively in a large, de-centralized environment
  • Ability to connect with and manage the efforts of a wide variety of alumni and friends of an institution
  • Excellent presentation skills and superior written and verbal communication skills required

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • Understanding of nonprofit organizational infrastructure, including institutional leadership (i.e. board of trustees, President’s Office), divisional leadership (faculty chairs/leaders), alumni structure (Alumni Council and related committees), parents’ councils, and patient and student experiences, as well as the operations and goals of development and alumni relations teams with a focus on philanthropy.
