Dual Career Services Specialist

The Office of Faculty Affairs works closely with university leadership and faculty members across the university to advance and promote their important work. In collaboration with colleagues in the schools, Faculty Affairs strives to ensure the continued excellence of Johns Hopkins faculty by enhancing faculty development initiatives, increasing faculty diversity, and building a strong, inclusive, and collaborative faculty community. The newly created Dual Career Services Specialist will work as an internal consultant across the enterprise to help provide specialized hiring services support for Johns Hopkins University.

General Summary/Purpose:

The Dual Career Services Specialist will implement the vision of university leadership in creating and delivering a suite of offerings and programs for supporting dual career couples.  This resource will also provide university leadership with critical data (quantitative and qualitative) on program performance and provide recommended enhancements and changes to the dual career program that will allow it to evolve and meet the on-going needs of the University. This resource will assist in the recruitment and retention of Johns Hopkins faculty by providing career resources and services to their spouses/partners in securing employment.  This resource will support both current and prospective faculty members (as well as certain executive staff roles). 

It is important to note that the dual career program at Johns Hopkins University does not create an entitlement to employment nor does it guarantee a position, it only provides services to assist the spouse/ partner with securing employment.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement the vision of this program by overseeing the creation and implementation of the processes and tools needed for dual career partners.  This may require collaboration with internal and external resources to build tools and processes, such as a dedicated dual career website, intake forms and tracking databases.  
  • Collaborates with Vice Deans of Faculty, department leaders, departmental and central HR to understand specific hiring needs and challenges, develop strategies to meet these opportunities.  Is influential in helping to address barriers to success of the program.
  • Leverages internal university resources (e.g. career services in divisions, alumni networks, etc.)  and external resources (executive search firms, local employers, etc.) to support the program and individuals utilizing services.
  • Conducts initial intake sessions.  Refers qualified individuals for opportunities within Johns Hopkins and where possible, makes attempts to connect with other external employers.  Priority areas of focus will be to support faculty partners in connecting to academic opportunities within Johns Hopkins.
  • Monitors progress of internal searches and provides support as needed.
  • Interacts and develops relationships with internal and external stakeholders who can assist with the employment of spouses/partners of JHU university faculty.  These stakeholders include university administrators, faculty, and HR and recruitment staff as well as HR and other hiring officials at external employers.
  • Directs university faculty and their spouses/partners to other support resources including benefits and work/life programs and offerings to facilitate smooth transition into or retention within JHU.
  • Develop tools and templates for tracking activities and feedback on experiences for both candidates and search committees; provide regular reports to university leadership on the success of the program including hiring results and other critical demographic information.
  • Continuously researches and explores best practices in dual career university hiring, and incorporates appropriate tools and processes into practice at JHU.
  • Manages work flow such that resources can be focused on candidates during peak hiring seasons and on resource development and reporting during off-season periods.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five years of related experience working in an academic and/or health system environment required, including substantial experience with recruitment.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in recruitment in the other industries outside of academia is desired.

Technical Qualifications and Special certifications

Certifications in HR (e.g. SHRM) and/or recruitment (e.g. AIRS) is helpful but not necessary.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite.  Experience working with Applicant Tracking Systems, HR/Payroll Systems (SAP preferred) and other tools like LinkedIn for Recruitment, helpful.
  • Ability to work with diverse group of individuals throughout many levels of the organization and partner with internal/external resources.  Must be influential with these key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collegially, independently and as a member of a team.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills as well as strong, confident presentation skills.
  • Project management skills. Ability to independently prioritize, manage projects, budgets, and client expectations. Ability to trouble shoot creatively and independently, as required.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to synthesize large volumes of complex data into compelling reviews for senior university leadership.
  • Maintains confidentiality.

Salary Range: Commensurate with Experience

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
