Electrician - HSC

We are seeking an Electrician - HSC who performs maintenance, installation, and repair work (and planning thereof) on electrical/pneumatic equipment, systems, and components. This work is performed under limited supervision and using the tools and techniques of electrical technology. This position functions as a team leader and subject matter expert to train apprentices and more junior members of the Facilities team.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections and maintenance on electrical systems to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Reads and interprets complex schematic and construction drawings, service manuals, and other technical documents.
  • Follows instructions provided by blueprints, drawings, written materials, work orders, and oral instructions.
  • Identifies, analyzes, diagnoses, and resolves routine and complex electrical equipment problems and component conditions.
  • Adhere to all applicable requirements, including safety standards and local codes.
  • Interpret diagrams, blueprints, and other related drawings.
  • Inventory and properly track supplies, equipment, tools, and machinery.
  • Communicate with Facilities leadership, other related trades, apprentices, and coworkers effectively to promote efficiency.
  • Trains peer and lower-level positions as directed by the supervisor, based on the guidelines of the JHU Apprenticeship program.
  • Works with the Electrical Maintenance Workers to requisitions in-house stock items.
  • Requests non-stock items for purchase subject to supervisor approval.
  • Makes decisions based on trade practices, the National Electrical Code, and supervisor direction as appropriate for the scope of this position.
  • Plans and estimates the materials and labor required to perform demand work and construction projects.
  • Actively engage Electrical Maintenance Workers into skills-based training activities to build their knowledge and effectively train them for growing skills independence.
  • Recommends and participates in departmental electrical operations development, improvement, and implementation as it relates to current/anticipated workload.
  • Performs work within reasonable lengths of time as measured against trade, industry, or engineered standards.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Five years of directly related experience.
  • Certification or license required.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and departmental clients.
  • Possesses the ability to solve problems and manage information effectively.
  • Must be able to complete tasks based on pre-determined timelines and deadlines.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical techniques, planning, estimating, codes, procedures, and materials is demonstrated by passing a master's electrical certification exam administered by a local or state government.
  • Applies a high level of electrical and safety knowledge indicated herein.
  • Safely uses tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, procedures, and practices, including the proper use of safety equipment as defined by OSHA and industry standards.
  • Identifies and avoids hazards as indicated by warning labels, signage, lights, and other warning devices.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Master Electrician preferred.
  • Successful completion of an Electrical Apprenticeship Program which is approved/accepted by local or state government.


Physical Requirements

  • Works in shop and mechanical area environments with exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise, and fumes.
  • Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures and other weather conditions.
  • Works within confined spaces as needed.
  • Works at heights of up to 30 feet above the surface using ladders, lifts, and equipment.
  • Work requires the ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires the ability to lift, push, pull, move, transport, and position tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents has little likelihood of harm when established health precautions are followed.
  • Work requires the use of protective safety devices including, but not limited to, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, infection prevention apparel/apparatus, and back belt.
  • Work requires high visual acuity.
  • Work requires a high level of manual dexterity.


***This is a Bargaining Unit position. All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions shall be considered “probationary” employees until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. The university will notify the employees’ union. Bargaining Unit employees shall become eligible for benefits upon completion of their probationary period.

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
