Employer Outreach Specialist

General Summary/Purpose

This position leads the Career Services local, regional and national employer relations efforts, develop employer development strategy, cultivate key partnerships both internal and external to JHU, coordinates employer relations efforts, represents JHSPH and advises client base of employers across all sectors, maintains a variety of databases tracking employer information, student information and statistics on office usage and program attendance at employer-related events.  Manages the online career management system, Handshake. 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Develop existing partnerships outside JHSPH and initiate new employer relationships at senior levels.

  • Manage the on-campus recruiting program and related employer events (including but not limited to the Career Fair and Access to Experts panels).
  • Lead Employer Relations efforts in developing an employer development strategy and system to develop metrics for evaluating success of the program.
  • Represents JHSPH at local and national professional development associations related to employer development.
  • Lead planning meetings with department members related to employer development strategy evaluation and development.
  • Participates regularly in ongoing staff development and in-service training sessions.
  • Supervises ancillary student workers to ensure outstanding customer service to employers, alumni and students.
  • May travel domestically.


Leads employer relations efforts for team, contacts and visits employers independently, manages outside relationships, develop data base and regular reports evaluating success of effort.  Manages online Employer management system (EEP). Must be able to operate complex on-line recruiting management system and train career services staff in their operation and use.

External contacts:  Represents JHSPH at local and national professional development associations related to employer development.  Extensive external contacts in person, by correspondence and telephone with senior managers, chairs of alumni associations, senior human resources professionals and hiring managers. 



Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree related in Public Health, Business, Human Resources or Organizational Development.

Five (5) years’ experience:

  •  in employer relations, business development, and human resources from a recruiting perspective
  • in university development, alumni relations or other related marketing and program management experience
  • Require working knowledge across all business sectors: private, public, non-profit and multilateral. 

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *


Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in related field preferred.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Computer and standard office equipment is used on a daily basis. 
  • Must have excellent computer skills (Word, Excel and Access) and to quickly learn other programs as needed.
  • Well-defined organizational and communication skills with knowledge of hiring and recruiting management systems.
  • Strong supervision skills.
  • Ability to present information to large and small groups of employers and/or students.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and programs.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Well-developed public relations, speaking and writing skills required to effective represent JHSPH; especially in marketing JHSPH students to new employers.
  • Writing and editing skills necessary in handling correspondence and revision of office handouts.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, the Internet and additional software utilized in the Career Development profession.
  • Openness to learning new technologies for career development.
  • Team player and demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative work environment.
  • Flexibility with hours, especially during periods when programs may extend outside of regular work hours, including limited weekend work.
  • An international background and cross-cultural sensitivity to international employment issues and sectors.

Starting Salary Range: $51 975 - $71,497 /commensurate with experience

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
