Enterprise Network Engineer
IT@JH Networking, Telecom and Data Ctr is seeking an Enterprise Network Engineer who will collaborate with Researchers to support the needs of the Enterprise Research Network or Hornet (High Speed Research Network). Interactions are typically design meetings for requirements gathering or collaborations with their peers and sometimes end-user support. The typical customers are IT personnel, University staff and faculty. The Enterprise Network Engineer is responsible for supporting high speed connectivity to all aspects of the Enterprise. The Enterprise Network Engineer will participate in engineering design meetings and lead network projects supporting Hornet. The Enterprise Network Engineer typically works independently and receives project and support work from their manager or Network Architect; they may also receive tasks from the Service Now as incidents or requests for service.
The primary area of responsibility for this position is the research networking infrastructure (fiber/copper cabling, network equipment (recommendations, configuration, upgrading and troubleshooting), performance testing and monitoring (cacti, Cloudvision) on the Johns Hopkins Enterprise Network (MARCC, Bayview, East Baltimore, Homewood campuses). Required to travel between Bayview, Homewood & East Baltimore campuses.
Job Scope/Complexity
Position primarily focuses on moderately complex to highly complex designs for data and voice communication systems throughout the Johns Hopkins enterprise. Assignments for this position will typically involve engineering services for the entire Johns Hopkins enterprise, such as configuring/installing Internet Service Provider links, Internet2 services, engineering DWDM/Optical solutions, engineering routing solutions that span multiple campuses, and complex configuration changes that could be customer impactful across the entire enterprise (all Johns Hopkins entities: EB, BV, HW, Eastern, Keswick, Sibley, Howard County General, Suburban, APL, etc.). Position will engineer very complex designs that involve a multitude of variables, multiple vendors, and a broad customer base. Job complexity includes design/engineering/installation and overseeing large scale projects (campus wide and enterprise wide), troubleshooting complex routing and switching protocol issues, and interfacing with customers to understand needs. Typically, this job is focused on enterprise projects, so this position is expected to be able to travel throughout Maryland/DC to cover any Johns Hopkins location as required.

Network Analysis & Design
- Plan large technical projects from inception to completion by using standard project planning tools to deliver successful solutions.
- Lead network planning, network architecture design and engineering by directing and guiding junior staff to ensure network projects are delivered successfully.
- Develop project planning documents by using established departmental guidelines to deliver successful projects.
- Give formal presentations on ideas, designs, plans, and/or solutions by using standard presentation tools to communicate to a variety of audiences.
Installation & Configuration
- Install and configure networks from inception to completion by following standard project plans to deliver successful solutions.
- Install and configure moderate to large scale networks, including implementation and verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN by using established procedures and tools to deliver quality products to customers.
- Implement Internet connectivity (e.g., engineering of peering arrangements) supporting thousands of users by using appropriate tools to deliver service to customers.
- Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project. Communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
- Install, configure, and interpret results of network analyzers to proactively manage performance and identify, resolve, and prevent problems.
Technical Collaboration
- Interface successfully and positively with a broad customer base with varying degrees of technical competency by using verbal, written, and other communication tools to promote collaboration among colleagues.
- Work with researchers on the implementation of advanced networking technologies, such as Internet2 by participating in meetings, forums, seminars to provide guidance in the use of newer technologies.
- Lead collaboration efforts with school, campus, or Enterprise-wide peers on assignments.
- Mentor other staff positions such as Network Engineer I and II, Analysts, or Network Technicians by reviewing their work to give them guidance with their tasks and training in the tools to be used.
- Serve as Project Lead for Enterprise-wide assignments by following established Project Management Standards to deliver projects to customers.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Six years of related work experience in the area of Enterprise or Service Provider Networking.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Four-year degree with 6 years of experience in a university setting with an extensive knowledge in the following areas,
- Layer 3 technologies (BGP, OSPF, MLAG, MPLS)
- Layer 2 technologies (Spanning Tree, PoE, QoS, VoIP, VXLan)
- DWDM
- Copper Cabling, Fiber and Optics
- TCP/UDP
- IPv4 and IPv6
- DHCP
- Python, Ansible, automation
Classified Title: Enterprise Network Engineer

Starting Salary Range: $99,800 - $175,000 Annually (Commensurate w/exp)
