Financial Analyst

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Financial Analyst  this position coordinates financial activities related to the clinical practice for the Department of Emergency Medicine. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Finance to ensure smooth and efficient functioning of all financial aspects related to the department’s clinical practice. Assists in budgeting and reporting activities for JHU, including the maintenance of the annual faculty compensation model and salary budgets to sponsored and non-sponsored accounts. Performs detailed quantitative tasks to manage large data sets relating to clinical hours and operations, faculty effort and salary allocations, clinical productivity, and profitability. This position will interact extensively with the Assistant Director of Finance and the Senior Financial Analyst.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Faculty Compensation 

  • Assists in the maintenance of the annual faculty compensation model.
  • Prepare quarterly analysis to ensure salaries are accurately charged to sponsored and non-sponsored accounts.
  • Calculate quarterly clinical overage, shift differential, and high needs pay for faculty and other clinical staff.


Clinical Hours

  • Manages clinical hours tracking and reporting for Emergency Medicine clinical faculty and PAs at JHH, Bayview, Howard County General Hospital, and Sibley Memorial Hospital. Maintain monthly clinical hours report, updating clinical commitment variances and departmental budgeted vs. actual hours worked variance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve clinical schedule data issues with Qgenda and/or Tableau. Work with faculty and PA schedulers at multiple clinical sites to ensure integrity and proper allocation of clinical hour data for reporting.


Productivity Reporting

  • Assist in the production of integrated quarterly provider statements for faculty & PAs, detailing compensation earned, incentive supplements, and progress towards clinical commitment (YTD hours surplus/deficit).


Financial

  • Participate in the development of department’s SOM expense budget in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Finance and Senior Financial Analyst.
  • Reviews monthly statements and compiles variance reports to highlight budget variances. Suggests and/or implements corrective actions on a monthly basis to ensure budget compliance.
  • Analyzes and interprets complex financial data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and projecting financial profitability to inform decision-making.
  • Produce quarterly and ad-hoc reports integrating clinical revenue collection, clinical effort, volumes, and internal and external salary support data from various sources.
  • Responsible for producing and analyzing JHH Monthly Report of Operations. Generate monthly internal financial packets for HAL and Lifeline groups and conduct monthly meetings reviewing financial status.
  • Plans and conducts complex studies to determine cost of business activities. Recommends budget adjustments and other cost improvement measures.
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, cost-accounting systems, statistical packages to manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Integrate large data sets from various sources and programs into automated or semi-automated reports using Excel, Access or SQL, Tableau, and SAP.
  • Communicate with appropriate internal and external administrative offices to ensure that established procedures are followed.


Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • High to Expert level Excel proficiency required.
  • Knowledge of accounting and budgeting theory and practices.
  • Ability to make independent judgements and to act on decisions on a daily basis. Ability to work for long periods of time without direction.
  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
  • Very strong organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize own work as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of University and Hospital employees as well as outside contacts.
  • Function as a team player and works to maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers, peers and supervisors.


Physical Requirements 

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10lbs or less.
  • Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 30lbs or less.
  • Local travel required.
  • State, regional, national travel may periodically be required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.
  • Three years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
