Financial Manager

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) supports the commercialization of university technology through technology licensing, the development of corporate research collaborations, and venture creation.


Reporting to JHTV’s Director of Finance, we are seeking a Financial Manager to lead the operations of the JHTV Finance team and provides direct oversight and hands-on administration of JHTV’s global financial operations, to include technology transfer licensing activity, the operating budget, and JHTV’s strategic programs. The position ensures JHTV adheres to JHU financial controls, policies, and procedures and also works closely with JHTV's senior leadership and management teams to provide resolution assistance on complex issues. The position will serve as a liaison to the JHU Controller's Office, Budget Office, and other University Administration and Schools regarding Finance operations and strategic issues and opportunities.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Financial

  • Alongside the Director, manages Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures’ annual and five-year GAAP operating and capital plan and quarterly financial reporting deliverables, to include actual to budget variance analysis and forecasting.
  • Manages Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures’ year-end financial close.
  • Oversees a wide range of accounting and procurement functions in JHU’s accounting system and other systems to support JHTV’s licensing activity and other programs activity to include billing, accounts receivable, revenue and expense transfers, cash accounting and reconciliation, procurement, external vendor payments, accrual activity, and funds balance management. Reviews financial activity for compliance and accuracy.
  • Monitors JHTV divisional budgets and actual expenditure activity for cost efficiency. Ensures that expenditures are aligned with JHTV’s strategic mission.
  • Oversees monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad-hoc financial and metrics-based reporting, drawing from JHTV internal databases and JHU’s accounting system, to support JHTV leadership, JHU divisions, and external stakeholders.
  • Oversees sponsored research and restricted gift activity including proposal development and submission, post-award management and accounting, and sponsor and donor reporting as needed.
  • Approves transactions in SAP and Concur; serves as Procurement Card approver.
  • Provides oversight and assistance to JHTV Staff regarding entries into JHU’s accounting system and complex vendor-related issues. Provides direct support with attention to time-sensitive deliverables.
  • Participates in continuous audit monitoring in concert with the Controller’s Office to ensure compliance with JHU best practices.
  • Collaborates with JHTV Licensing and Intellectual Property groups on complex issues, improvement opportunities, and new initiatives.
  • Collaborates with Office of Planning and Budget, JHU Controller’s Office, Tax Office, Shared Services, and JHURA, ORA, DAR, and Sponsored Projects regularly on a variety of initiatives.
  • Monitors compensation, headcount, and other key HR Finance data.
  • On a regular and continuous basis, exercises judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
  • In absence of the Director, represents JHTV Finance in financial matters.


Supervisory

  • Alongside Director, leads a finance team of 5 and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Financial Operations team. Supervises, trains, and continuously monitors transactional and reporting duties.
  • Motivates team, provides strong leadership and day-to-day direction. Meets regularly to review metrics and to troubleshoot issues. As needed, conducts performance management, and addresses employee relations matters in a timely fashion.
  • Participates in hiring and onboarding of new staff.
  • Identifies opportunities for process efficiencies and business continuity measures, to include automation and new software tools. Leads implementation efforts.
  • Sets clear performance expectations, provides feedback, recommends training and coaching when appropriate.
  • Promotes and models a culture of exceptional customer service.
  • Serves as a key member of the JHTV’s management team, providing leadership and direction on a variety of topics.

  • Ability to leverage data from different sources and synthesize results. Ability to analyze large data sets to perform trend analysis.
  • Proactive communication style and comfort with reaching out to a broad range of contacts both within the JHU organization and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, a flexible work style, and ability to manage multiple challenging projects in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Broad knowledge of financial planning and budgeting principles. Understanding of general accounting principles and practices.
  • Able to identify short and long-term problems, strengths and weaknesses of current practices, alternatives, and implementing creative solutions to address complicated issues.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of SAP and end user functions preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations related to sponsored funding for educational institutions (Circular A-21, A- 133, and FAR).
  • Working knowledge of electronic proposal submission systems, i.e., COEUS, FIBI, NIH commons, FastLane, and Grants.gov.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.
  • Five years related financial/accounting and financial management experience, e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling the monetary resources of a department, center, or unit.
  • Additional education (master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
