Financial Manager

We are seeking a Financial Manager who will be responsible for AP/AR/payroll functions and activity for the School of Medicine. The Financial Manager leads a team to oversee and approve transactions and establish and maintain procedures for an efficient and effective workflow.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Coordinates

  • Oversee a team of Financial Analysts to ensure that accounts payable, accounts receivables, and all SOM payroll transactions occur smoothly, efficiently, and in compliance with JHU policies and procedures.
  • Ensure two-way communication to create advocacy; implement feedback loops for knowledge transfers and cultivate a shared understanding of financial activities.
  • Coordinate with departments, FP&A, Faculty Practice, Research Finance, University Controller, Internal Audit, and JHHS/JHM to monitor all payroll activity and review and set workflow procedures.


Applies Knowledge

  • Provide financial consultation and direction for significant, critical and complex projects, business operations and initiatives.


Creates/Prepares/Develops

  • Prepare, monitor, advise scholarship usage SOM-wide; monitor gift/endowment activity; advise of fund balances by source for spend opportunity.
  • Ensure gifts/endowments are maximized.
  • Set metrics to monitor response time to departmental requests and report regularly on actual performance compared to metrics.


Analyzes/Interprets

  • Monitor and ensure balance sheet fund reconciliation.
  • Interpret financial reports on available endowed and gift funding to ensure active and proper usage of funds.
  • Advise leadership of opportunities for funds deployment.
  • Alert leadership of potential fund balance issues and offer a remediation strategy.


Approves/Verifies

  • Approve transactions.
  • Set procedures for workflow for all areas of responsibility.


Supervises

  • Directly supervise two Financial Analysts, one Student Acc/Financial Aid Analyst, one Endowment/Gift Analyst, and one Fund Accountant.
  • Responsible for establishing and evaluating responsibilities as described by employee job descriptions.


Assigns

  • Assign functional responsibilities to analysts as necessary to produce school required analyses, long-range plans, and 'what-if' scenarios.


Trains

  • Share and ensure proficiency in Excel, Business Objects, EPSi, Tableau, Cognos.
  • Train employees on expected customer service.


Collaborates

  • Work collaboratively with SOM Department Directors, Administrators; JHM Budget; JHU Budget; Financial Operations colleagues.
  • Work collaboratively with Training/Policy associate; financial analytics colleagues; JHHS financial colleagues; Faculty Practice colleagues; research Colleagues; JHU Internal Audit.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong supervisory abilities.

  • Strong familiarity with accounting practices and systems.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact with faculty and staff, including all levels of leadership across JHU.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word and PowerPoint.

  • Strong customer service orientation and focus on details, accuracy and meeting pre-determined deadlines.

  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible financial and business operations experience, preferably in a large and complex organization.
  • Advanced Excel skills, with demonstrated knowledge of Pivot tables, formulas and other functions, experience with other data reporting tools.
  • Proven communication, organizational, and analytic skills in a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning, change management and process improvement skills.
  • Ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, auditing, accounts receivable, and reserve analysis.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in research financial management and academic business operations.
  • Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience in managing and developing high performance teams within a highly change oriented culture.

Starting Salary Range: $72,600 - $127,000 Annually ($88,500 Targeted; Commensurate with experience)
