Financial Manager

We are seeking a Financial Manager who will be responsible for the fiscal management of a department or significant business unit. Manage financial activities involving a variety of accounts in the area’s portfolio, e.g. general funds, grants, contracts, gift accounts. Oversee the development and management of budgets. Responsible for overall financial planning and cost analysis for the area. Perform comprehensive analysis of financial data and make projections to ensure financial performance and efficient use of resources. Report to senior level management and directly supervise or oversee the related work of financial and administrative staff. Provide data and tools for decision making to improve financial and administrative processes. Represent the area and liaise with internal teams and institutional stakeholders on issues related to the fiscal performance of the area.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist senior management with strategic financial planning.
  • Provide financial consultation and direction for significant complex projects, business operations, and initiatives.
  • Oversee the development of all types of the department/unit budgets.
  • Review final budgets to ensure application of appropriate cost rates, such as indirect and benefit rates and confirm anticipated personnel actions are calculated appropriately.
  • Responsible for monitoring and overall analysis of budget patterns, expenditures, and revenue.
  • Oversee processes for the management of all active budget accounts. Provide oversight for the appropriate expenditure of funds.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure resolution of funding shortfalls.
  • Provide management for overall department/division financial systems. Develop, implement, and oversee the continued improvement of financial systems and processes.
  • Supervise and/or exercise authority over administrative and/or financial staff responsible for finance related work.
  • Develop complex financial reports for forecasting, trending, and results analysis. Develop management, narrative, and statistical reports as needed.
  • Review and approve all finance related documents, e.g. capital expenditures proposals, profit plans, operating records, and financial statements.
  • Represent the department/unit and make formal presentations regarding overall fiscal status
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant university and/or agency regulations and restrictions
  • Collaborate with appropriate internal and external administrative offices to ensure that required policies and procedures are followed.
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field
  • Five years related financial/accounting and financial management experience, e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controllingthe monetary resources of a department, center, or unit
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
