HVAC Tech - HSC

We are seeking an HVAC Technician - HSC. The position requires experience in all phases of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) service, operation, and maintenance. Reports to the HVAC Supervisor. Operates, maintains and repairs HVAC equipment for the systems serving the JHU campus.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with the assigned foreman and/or other trades to complete projects and work orders efficiently.
  • Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning systems to identify equipment and/or systems repair and/or replacement needs.
  • Fabricates equipment parts to meet specialty needs and/or replace unavailable parts.
  • Informs personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders to provide information for making decisions, taking appropriate action, and/or complying with building and safety regulations.
  • Inspects HVAC systems and their components (e.g., heating units, building exhaust fans, ventilation units, etc.) to evaluate conditions, identify necessary repairs, and recommend preventive maintenance.
  • Installs heating and air conditioning equipment and systems to provide enhanced and/or upgraded capabilities.
  • Maintains vehicle, tools, and equipment to ensure availability and safe operating conditions.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars, as assigned to convey and/or gather information required to perform job functions.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance as needed to ensure the ongoing functioning of HVAC systems.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., repair status, activity logs, etc.) to document activities and/or convey information.
  • Repairs heating and air conditioning systems and/or components (e.g., pumps, motors, air handlers, fan coils, piping, etc.) to ensure a comfortable work environment.
  • Requests equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure the availability of items required to complete the necessary installation and/or repair.
  • Responds to emergency situations during or after hours to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Transports a variety of tools, equipment, and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at the job site.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Performs algebra and/or geometry; reviews and interprets highly technical information; writes technical materials and/or speaks persuasively to implement desired actions; and solves practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to perform the job's functions satisfactorily include indoor air monitoring equipment and interpreting resulting data; standards for design and construction; air conditioning and heating codes; hazards and safety precautions; and refrigerant handling and disposal.
  • Performs single technical tasks with a need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions occasionally. Specific skill-based competencies required to perform the job functions satisfactorily include operating equipment used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC equipment; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and handling hazardous materials.
  • Schedules activities and/or meetings; gathers, collates, and/or classifies data; and uses job-related equipment.
  • Ability to read and write to read work orders and to complete records, maintenance schedules, and so forth.
  • Ability to interact and/or work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.


Scope of Responsibility

  • Maintain a safe and comfortable atmosphere in all of the facilities. Ensure the safe and efficient operation of all equipment.


Decision Making

  • Should have the knowledge and confidence to make decisions regarding the safe operation of the building/campus systems.


Authority

  • Assumes supervisory when needed, normally defers to the HVAC supervisor.


Communication

  • Must be able to interact with Faculty, Staff, and Students and clearly communicate problems, solutions, and effects concerning their environment.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent required.
  • Training in the industry in the form of an apprenticeship or similar education from an accredited organization.
  • Three years of field experience in an HVAC service atmosphere. Years of experience may be considered for training.
  • HVAC Journeyman’s license is preferred.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Certification

  • CFC certification
  • Driver’s License required


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or otherwise move about campus continuously.
  • Ability to ascend/descend ladders periodically to perform building maintenance.

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
