Health Education Specialist – Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)

The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being portfolio supports health education, primary care and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. In addition to health education, our integrated service delivery model provides in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support though phone and online resources.

We are seeking a Health Education Specialist – Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) who will report to the Associate Director of Student Well-Being.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programs and services, with a particular focus on AOD.
  • Provide administrative support such as ordering materials, maintaining educational resources, and scheduling rooms for events.
  • Work closely with other members of their department, serving as back-up for their roles if needed.
  • Collaborate closely with other departments to develop well-being campaigns and programming.
  • Provide motivational interviewing to student and learner populations.
  • Provide consultation, training, and resources to campus partners and students regarding AOD.
  • Oversee Sober Party Monitor protocol which includes TIPs training implementation and collaboration with colleagues on event registration approval process where alcohol will be served.
  • Host on-campus events to coincide with holidays/events that are associated with an increased risk for excessive drinking.
  • Use social marketing and innovative technology to enhance outreach and marketing efforts.
  • Maintain active participation in local/national organizations related to college health and AOD.
  • Develop awareness campaigns using various mediums (fliers, ads, bulletin boards, yard signs, social media, etc.) to address college health issues.
  • Develop and produce advertising and marketing materials both in print and electronically working closely with the Student Well-Being Communications Associate.
  • Assist with surveys, data collection, and other types of qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of innovative presentations and programs based on sound public health principles and evidence-based best practices.
  • Conduct educational programs on health and well-being issues as needed for specific student groups, such as residential advisors, athletic teams, Fraternity & Sorority Life, and other student organizations.
  • Assist students with direct health education and appropriate referrals.
  • Work closely with other members of their department, filling in for some of their responsibilities if needed.
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule. Nights and weekends may be needed.
  • Be willing and able to take on other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health, health education, health promotion, or a related field. 
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a similar or related field.

  • Certified Public Health (CPH), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), or Substance Abuse Specialist credentialed preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree preferred.

Work experience within a collegiate setting; preferably with high-achieving students.

Familiarity with BASICS and/or motivational interviewing techniques preferred.

Familiarity with best practices in college health promotion, including those specific to alcohol and other drug use preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, presenting and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Cultural competency and ability to work with a diverse population.
  • High level of organizational skills and proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner.
  • Must be proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • As a university-wide position, staff must be available to travel to JHU campuses in the Baltimore and DC regions.
  • Working knowledge of health promotion and behavior change theories.
  • The ability to work as a collaborative team member with students, faculty, and staff throughout the campus community.
  • Knowledge and experience with AOD issues in institutions of higher education as well as specialized expertise and knowledge of the effects of substance use and its intersections across well-being.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
