General summary/purpose:

Hopkins Retrospective is an outreach and research initiative sponsored by the Office of the President at Johns Hopkins University that aims to better understand the history of the University and weave that history into the university experience. The Program Manager’s role is to oversee Hopkins Retrospective, including: coordinating the execution of exhibitions and installations for the initiative; creating, developing, and managing the web and social media presence for the initiative; planning and carrying out oral histories for the initiative’s website; and developing and overseeing JHU history-related projects around the university campuses. The position will report to the University Archivist and have dotted-line reporting to the Office of the President. Specific duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create, research, design, implement, manage, and assess a variety of projects to incorporate the history of Johns Hopkins University into community life across the Johns Hopkins University campuses, including exhibitions and installations, and encourage participation from the JHU community.
  • Conduct and produce oral histories of faculty, alumni, and staff; plan interviews; carry out background research.
  • Ensure transcription of interviews; and coordinate with the archives to ensure interviews are preserved and discoverable.
  • Develop partnerships with JHU faculty, administrators, and staff  across divisions and units (academic divisions and departments, President’s Office, Alumni Relations, Communications and others) to undertake history-related projects or programs.
  • Collaborate with Office of President and other stakeholders to set program strategy and direction.
  • Teach and support undergraduate courses and classes on Hopkins history.
  • Manage Hopkins Retrospective’s web and social media presence (web site, Twitter, and Instagram) and identify opportunities to enhance it; create or locate historical content to use on these platforms.
  • Manage Hopkins Retrospective budget.
  • Manage all aspects of Hugh Hawkins Research Fellowship, including advertising for applications, reviewing applicants, and disbursing fellowship award money to winners.
  • Work closely with the faculty author of an upcoming book on the history of Hopkins to coordinate editorial meetings and other tasks as required.
  • Coordinate all operational aspects of Hopkins Retrospective, including budgets, event planning, correspondence, marketing and the selection and supervision of student workers or volunteers.
  • Plan, implement, and oversee exhibitions of rare and unique materials documenting Hopkins history.
  • Supervise student workers, interns, and project staff.
  • Serve as a liaison for faculty on Johns Hopkins University history.


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master’s degree in history, public history, museum studies, archival studies, or related field required.
  • Three years of related experience required. 5 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Excellent research and writing skills; experience writing and producing content for a variety of audiences in various formats.
  • Advanced cultural competency skills.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to prioritize and organize workload for self and others.
  • Experience conducting and producing oral histories or interviews.
  • Proactive approach to decision making, identifying problems, and creating solutions.
  • Intellectual curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm for emerging public humanities practices in curation, education, and scholarship, and for bringing historical research to a broad public in innovative and accessible ways.
  • Excellent partnership-building skills and interest in collaboration.
  • Strong technology skills; ability to use technology to develop connections with an audience and within the broader community.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Expertise in Baltimore history, the history of higher education, or history of medicine.
  • Experience in emerging digital humanities practices and the ways in which online programs and social media can be used to create, engage, and develop audiences.
  • Curatorial experience developing physical and virtual exhibits with students.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
