Immunogenetics Laboratory Manager

The Pathology Department is seeking an Immunogenetics Laboratory Manager to manage, supervise and coordinate the activities of that section in both clinical service and research/development projects. The Immunogenetics Laboratory Manager will assist the Laboratory Director in maintaining the quality assurance program, in the training and continuing education of all personnel, in communication with physicians, surgeons, and coordinators and will participate in budget preparation for their section. 


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the activities of the laboratory section and provide supervision of bench supervisors, lead technologists and/or technologists in his/her section.
  • Develop training curriculum for the section.
  • Direct the training of new personnel.
  • Assist the Director in the evaluation of technical personnel.
  • Help develop the quality assurance program and ensure it maintenance.
  • Participate in the budget planning and administration of the laboratory.
  • Be available for consultation by other laboratory staff, transplant center personnel, and colleagues at other institutions on technical problems in organ donor histocompatibility testing.
  • Participate, including teaching, in local, in-house, regional and national histocompatibility workshops, seminars and meetings.
  • Participate in research and development.
  • In association with the Director of the laboratory, serve as technical authority with responsibility for ongoing research projects and independently manage and structure the progress of such projects so as to meet required deadlines and goals.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of finance, accounting and budgeting theory and practices. Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Johns Hopkins University accounting system and related fiscal offices. Specific knowledge of Medicine preferred as well as Medicare Cost Reporting.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and to act on decisions on a daily basis. Ability to work for long periods of time without direction.
  • Ability to prioritize own work and work of staff as needed. Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
  • Very strong organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to guide, oversee or coordinate the work of others.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of university employees, as well as outside contacts.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in a Biologic Science or administration/management.
  • Six years of experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
