Immunogenetics Technologist Trainee
The Pathology Department is seeking an Immunogenetics Technologist Trainee who under the direct supervision of the laboratory manager and/or bench supervisor the lab technologists will perform the following duties.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop Laboratory skills in one or more of the following areas: Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) Serology, In-vitro cellular assays, DNA Technology, Blood group serology, Flow Cytometry, Luminex based Assays, ELISA Assays, Deceased Donor On-call training.
- Genotype families.
- Prepare reagents accurately.
- Maintain quality control of reagents and equipment.
- Operate liquid nitrogen freezer and controlled rate cell freezer.
- Perform computer data entry.
- Tabulate, analyze and report issues.
- Perform meticulous record keeping.
- Learn to trouble shoot problems when they arise during technical procedures.
- Learn to teach techniques and principles.
- Able to demonstrate competencies at end of one year.
Specific Physical Requirements
- Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
Laboratory Environment
- Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed.
- Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.
- Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area.
- Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, radiation protocols, and other bio-hazardous materials.
- Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
- Rotating on-call, weekend, or pager duties are required. Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. (Overtime possible when authorized/needed to meet business and patient needs).
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science.
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- One course in genetics, immunology.

Starting Salary Range: $19.75 - $35.35 HRLY ($48,500 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
