Instructional Designer, Online Programs

General Summary/Purpose:
The Instructional Designer will provide vision, leadership, and coordination in designing, developing, and delivering fully online courses and technology-enhanced instructional materials for K-12academically advanced programs delivered by CTY. The Instructional Designer will maintain CTY standards of excellence in course development and delivery, and act as a project lead in various assigned special projects necessary for the maintenance and development of online courses. 
 

NOTE: This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

NOTE: 6 month duration position

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Instructional Design (75%)

  • Guide the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of complex courses, ensuring competency alignment among courses to achieve program objectives.
  • Consult with faculty to identify and integrate the appropriate instructional design and technologies needed to employ evidence-based instructional practices to enhance the learning process.
  • Collaborate and consult with faculty on the effective use of Web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional strategies to develop or revise their courses
  • Provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, active learning, and use of assessments activities. 
  • Coordinate the development of instructional materials that are functional, informative, engaging, and consistent with sound instructional design principles, including alignment of course objectives with learning activities, instructional resources, and assessments. 
  • Guide the creation of supporting material/media (simulations, role plays, games, case studies, etc.)
  • Utilize multimedia technology and authoring tools to develop interactive and engaging instructional resources including video, audio podcasts, and graphics 
  • Research and evaluate new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and approaches and policies for potential application to instructional design.
  • Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables
  • Collaborate with multimedia team to develop media products for use in online courses including presentations, video, audio podcasts, and graphics
  • Monitor and stay abreast of new and emerging technologies
  • Study and evaluate instructional design theories for application to a variety of program and department needs
  • Read and stay abreast of JHU and peer institutional best practices and evaluate them for potential application in instructional design at CTY
  • Document development and revision process – meetings held, resources shared, guidance provided, suggestions for future improvements noted, etc.
  • Ensure that new development/revisions meet CTY and program standards
  • Evaluation of the development process that has taken place (i.e. Lessons Learned meeting, Satisfactory Checklist Review, and Satisfactory Student Evaluations)
  • Communicate successes and potential/existing problems in a timely manner
  • Identify plausible solutions to address issues
  • Apply learning and best practices to processes whenever feasible

 

Project Lead for New Development Courses (15%)

  • Contact and consult with faculty members 
  • Convey expectations of course standards
  • Collaborate with new development instructors 
  • Edit materials and respond in a timely manner
  • Troubleshoot and problem solve issues 
  • Motivate faculty members 
  • Prioritize time and have clear boundaries
  • Collaborate with supervisor on problems 
  • Keep Program Directors updated on a regular basis
  • Tracking/Time Management
  • Ensure that courses are designed in accordance with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility guidelines as required by JHU
  • Actively engage with faculty during the project development process
  • Meet course development deadlines 
  • Document and communicate timely updates on the status of course development projects to IRC team, faculty and program directors.
  • Review courses using common quality standards process of our online courses

 

Workshops (10%)

  • Assist in the planning, development and implementation of workshops and other activities that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional strategies and technology, and student learning outcomes.
  • Conduct individual training and coaching for faculty to meet instructional design and development learning opportunities and needs.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or other related discipline is preferred.  
  • Minimum 5-years of professional experience in an academic or corporate environment, designing and developing distance or online instruction.
  • Thorough knowledge of online instructional design, pedagogy, emerging technology, and distance learning best practices desirable.  
  • Demonstrated use of Quality Matters™ rubric or similar course design quality standards.
  • Experience working with both Mac and PC platforms.
  • Minimum 2-years of experience developing interactive instructional materials and learning objects.
  • Two to three years of online teaching experience at the higher education level 
  • Experience and certification in professional course evaluation (Quality Matters)

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Instructional Design 

  • Must be service oriented, self-motivated, organized, and a detail-oriented team player who is capable of participating in collaborative instructional development processes and activities.
  • In-depth understanding of learning theories and instructional design models
  • Experience with multimedia (audio, graphics, and video) and educational technologies
  • In-depth Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply Instructional Design models/principles (Backward Design, ADDIE; etc.) to an online environment
  • Knowledge of various course assessment techniques and methods.  
  • Knowledge of cognitive theories of learning and human development
  • Ability to solve problems in enterprising and proactive ways
  • Ability to conduct quality reviews of existing online courses using National Standards for Quality Online Learning (NSQ)/Quality Matters (QM), National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and national curriculum standards (such as common core)
  • In-depth understanding of Section 508, WCAG 2.1 and UDL standards
  • Familiarity with copyright laws and creative commons

Technical

  • Experience with web-based course management tools (especially Moodle) and online conferencing software (such as Zoom)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365 apps and Teams and
  • Experience on Mac and PC platforms.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies 
  • Demonstrated ability to train one-on-one and in a group setting in a collaborative and professional way using multiple modalities
  • Experience with multimedia, presentation and educational technology tools such as Camtasia, Nearpod, Desmos, Geogebra and H5P

Managerial

  • Excellent time management skills, organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and the ability to deal with multiple constituencies concurrently in a dynamic and fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to work independently to solve problems in enterprising and proactive ways 
  • Ability to monitor and report on status of assigned projects  
  • Ability to analyze data and communicate trends and issues

Collaborative

  • Communication skills (oral, written, and interpersonal) must be at a professional level
  • Must be able to work effectively with multiple constituencies in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment 
  • Requires a customer service orientation to work well with course authors, course developers, instructional designers and other CTY staff members
     

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types and formats, and related software and platforms (i.e., Panopto, Camtasia Studio, Kaltura, etc.).
  • Proven ability to continually adapt and learn new procedures, systems, and software applications.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate using a variety of synchronous meeting tools (i.e., Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems, Microsoft Office 365 suite

Collaborate with JHU CTY Instructional Design group to share best practices

 

Physical Requirements for the Job:

Ability to access and transmit information using a computer; dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery; ability to communicate regularly via telephone or Skype, email, and face-to-face with internal and external audiences and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
