Internship and Employment Specialist

General Summary/Purpose:

The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School Career Development Office is seeking a dynamic, curious, and highly motivated Internship and Employment Specialist to join a student-focused team.

The primary role of the position will be to source short-term, project, and internship opportunities for students, with a particular focus on finance roles. 


The Internship and Employment Specialist will work closely with recruiters and business professionals from companies and organizations to develop, drive and execute on short-term internship employment strategies for Carey Business School students who may be using Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). This position is based in Baltimore.


Note: Job may require occasional travel between DC and Baltimore locations


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Employer Relations

  • Under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Employer Relations and the entire Employer Relations team, the Internship and Employment Specialist will lead the research, strategy, and execution of developing a consistent pipeline of short-term, project, and internship opportunities for students.
  • Develops and manages ongoing relationships with companies, agencies and organizations, domestically and internationally, that leads to short-term, employment opportunities (up to 12 months after a May or August graduation) for students.  Assists the Employer Relations team with researching and sourcing employment leads.
  • Manages relationships with corporate recruiters and hiring managers in portfolio, identify new employers, and record and manage contacts in database.
  • Networks with alumni and others sources within assigned area to strengthen and broaden relationships.
  • Coordinates with employer partners to conduct on-campus employer focused events, info sessions, on-campus interviews, etc.
  • Analyzes relevant recruiting data and determines trends to target specific companies.
  • Markets students to specific companies based on student interest and qualifications, and hiring organization’s recruitment need.
  • Educates employers on best ways to connect with students and on tools available to employers for student interaction and evaluation.  
  • Provide employers with information and resources on understanding OPT and CPT regulations.
  • Collects feedback from employers and students on employer events to ensure quality delivery and mutual satisfaction.  Use feedback to make necessary adjustments.
  • Researches and stays informed in national, state and local hiring practices, employment trends and other labor related issues for appropriate industry verticals.
  • Work closely with Student Services and the Office of International Services.
  • Collaborates closely with Employer Relations Team on existing and developing employer relationships.


Student Advising

  • Provides student advising in the area of short-term, internship, project strategy.
  • Work with students 1-1 or in groups to navigate the process of selecting the right short-term project assignment
  • Determine readiness for direct employer interface and assist in connecting students directly with employers, alumni, etc. 


Career Development Project Responsibility:

Assume responsibility for one or more projects within the Career Development office.  Potential projects include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as main point of contact for all new employer requests. Schedule initial engagement meetings with appropriate employer relations team member

  • Oversee and monitor job postings on internal job/internship board.  Help employers set up new accounts in the system.

  • Coordinate on campus info sessions, on-campus interviewing (OCI), employer recruitment events.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources or closely related field.  Five years of related experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency.


JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years’ experience in corporate/university recruiting, human resources, talent management, or related career services/higher education field preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge in the areas of sourcing, selection, and employment processes for short-term jobs
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong communication, networking, and business development skills.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with individuals and groups, and prepare and deliver presentations. 
  • Proficient computer skills, especially Microsoft Office applications and internet navigation to reach and connect with target audiences. 
  • Well-developed interpersonal marketing and communications skills.
  • Open, friendly, personable attitude.
  • Excellent customer service and relationship management skills

  • Organized and detail oriented

  • Experience working in Outlook and Excel

  • Experience working with CRMs, such as Salesforce

  • Familiar with OPT/CPT and H1B visa process

Starting Salary Range: $50,956 - $70,095*

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
