Knowledge SUCCESS Communications Officer

General Summary/Purpose: 

Knowledge SUCCESS (Strengthening Use, Capacity, Collaboration, Exchange, Synthesis, and Sharing) is a five-year global project funded by USAID’s Office of Population and Reproductive Health to support learning, and create opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange, within the family planning and reproductive health community. The project is led by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs in partnership with FHI 360, Amref Health Africa, and the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics.


Knowledge SUCCESS is seeking a Communications Officer to develop and implement communications strategies and prepare materials that enhance the visibility of Knowledge SUCCESS and the understanding of knowledge management for family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH), particularly in the context of the COVID-19 response. The person selected for this position will assist the Communications Team Lead in planning and implementing communication campaigns for Knowledge SUCCESS products and events. The Communications Officer will manage the project’s social media accounts and assist with website content management. The ideal person for this position is a skilled writer and editor who enjoys crafting compelling narratives through a variety of written and visual formats. This position is based in Baltimore, MD; remote work may be considered on a temporary basis.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the successful execution of communications campaigns and related materials from conceptualization to completion; ensure quality, timeliness, and effectiveness of materials.
  • Produce engaging and informative written, visual, and multimedia content in support of communications objectives, working independently and with regional counterparts in USAID priority countries. 
  • Prepare dissemination materials including key findings reports, fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations, policy briefs, social media messages, and web collateral.
  • Oversee the drafting of regular reports on the program’s activities (including monthly activities updates and semi-annual reports)
  • Work with regional KM Officers to creatively package and promote regional KM activities and success stories.
  • Support immediate and emerging communications needs around COVID-19 and FP/RH. 
  • Manage project social media accounts, including maintaining a content calendar and tracking analytics. 
  • Create content for, and oversee dissemination of, email campaigns and newsletters.
  • Identify new channels for innovative dissemination and promotion of project materials, experts, events, products.
  • Ensure all products and promotional efforts comply with the project branding strategy.


Minimum Qualifications (Required)

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two (2) years related experience.


Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exceptional writing and analytical skills, and the ability to write strategically and creatively under tight deadlines
  • Experience managing projects and handling multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Interest in public health or international development
  • French skills (and comfort using French professionally)


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong interest in strategic communications and/or marketing
  • Ability to rapidly learn new topics
  • Experience with or strong interest in social media content generation and management
  • Experience with design software/programs (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, iMovie) and WordPress.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
