This position will be responsible for providing research and administrative computing support as well as network support for the Center for Inherited Disease Research (CIDR) and the Institute of Genetic Medicine (IGM). CIDR is a high throughput genotyping and sequencing production lab of 50+ staff. The team manages core server infrastructure, multi-petabyte NAS and SANS, large-scale tape libraries, HPC clusters, and end-user workstations, all running a combination of operating systems. New leading-edge exploratory projects come and go at a rapid pace while work continues on well-defined, long-term projects. The LAN Administrator works closely with the rest of the CIDR Informatics team to maintain a vibrant collaboration with CIDR and IGM researchers, anticipating emerging IT needs and continuously evolving the computing environment to match.Specific duties & responsibilities: Assist with providing full lifecycle support for CIDR and IGM servers and desktops running Windows, Linux and OS X operating systems and associated mass storage systems: specifying systems and obtaining quotes; operating system and software deployment; performance tuning; patch management; security audits; break/fix. Maintain the corresponding Ethernet and fibrechannel network infrastructure including Active Directory, NIS, and LDAP authentication, NFS and Samba file services, and copious monitoring. Respond to critical service outages, sharing off-hours issue handling with other team members. Document and perform data gathering and analysis. Utilize server logs to define root cause, security and maintenance issues. Develop tests plans and reports on results. Assist with providing documentation, and training to customers and computing staff. Maintain a current and comprehensive software environment for development and scientific computing. Aggressively automate wherever repetitive, error-prone manual efforts are discovered.  Install, configure, troubleshoot and perform routine systems management for servers and workstations.


Configure hardware and software. Troubleshoot and perform routine systems management of software and tapes, with routine database management tasks for MS SQL Server. Maintain the Windows server, workstation, create and delete user accounts, and other scripts that automate repetitive and time-consuming tasks. Keep software up to date running patch and Spyware scans on Windows machines and take appropriate action. Provide end-user support and advice to a large staff with diverse computing needs and challenges.



Extensive knowledge and understanding of Windows and Linux operating systems; familiarity with contemporary server, workstation, and storage hardware; knowledge of Active Directory architecture and administration; experience with NIS and LDAP systems, ideally in an Active Directory integrated environment; experience managing IIS (and ideally LAMP) environments for development and high-availability production; experience with Samba and NFS file services; experience with virtualization (Red Hat or VMWare and containerization (such as Docker); advanced scripting skills in one or more commonly used languages; some experience with software development in general; solid grounding in network protocols, infrastructure and services like DHCP; excellent communication skills. Must have excellent interpersonal skills to interact productively and efficiently with a large group of personnel.



HS Diploma/GED, two years college coursework and two years related experience required.  Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU  Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
