LAN Administrator III

For the departments assigned, we are seeking a LAN Administrator III whose primary responsibility for administration, testing, maintenance, performance, implementation, security and support of various departmental LAN platforms, including the installation and testing of new software, operating systems, related utilities/services, and hardware products as well as the integration of new products and /or software release upgrades into the current environment. Analyze user needs in the computing device (e.g., desktop, mobile devices, etc.) environment and make recommendations for products and services that meet those needs. Contribute to ensuring that the integrity of the device environment is maintained in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Responsible for delivery, moving and installing devices and related software as well as device inventory. At the school level, participate in the deployment, testing and maintenance of servers and services that benefit the larger community.

Lead role in assigned server related projects at the department and school level.


Specific duties & responsibilities


Install, Configure, Maintain, and Troubleshoot

  • Manage, monitor, administer, and support workstations, printers and mobile devices for supported department.
  • Maintain supported departments organizational units' users and groups using Active Directory.
  • Independently provide support to colleagues and customers in the area of hardware, software, image deployment, multimedia, and enterprise systems.
  • Exercise sound independent judgment when problem solving.
  • Work with Enterprise IT to resolve customer issues.


Analysis and Design

  • Evaluate, research, recommend, and implement technology improvements in the network, server, workstation, IT management systems, and multimedia environments.
  • Design, create, and maintain technical documentation for colleagues and customers.
  • Planning, design, and implementation of custom solutions for various computing environments.
  • Analyze user needs and develop recommendations for products and services that will meet the technical and functional requirements.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies in efforts to reduce cost, increase performance, improve security, and enhance managing and reporting.
  • Test and debug applications developed in house.
  • Stay abreast on the latest technological tools through independent research, including mobile technologies.


Project Collaboration

  • Assist with campus wide assignments and may oversee assignments as appropriate.
  • Work with Systems Engineers on various IT projects within KSAS and across the institution, and may assume team leadership as appropriate.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of information technology knowledgebase.


Relationship Management

  • Maintain professional relationships with colleagues and customers across Hopkins institutions.
  • Provide training for colleagues and customers on enterprise systems.
  • Frequently communicate with customers to ensure they are updated with the latest status and information available.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service.
  • Maintain relationships with outside vendors.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Must have in depth knowledge of the technical environment in the school, with special emphasis on desktop computing, including Windows and Mac operating systems, application software, and hardware, and the interface between client workstations and servers. Knowledge of Linux a plus.
  • In depth knowledge and experience with client management tools, including Microsoft Systems Center Suite, MS Deployment Toolkit, and JAMF Pro for Macs.
  • Systems administration knowledge of server and application virtualization technologies.
  • Strong critical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple priorities effectively.
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years college coursework.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge in the assigned IT environments.

Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
