LMS Software Engineer

General Summary/Purpose:

Operating at the highest level of programming and technical expertise, the LMS Software Engineer will work independently or on a team to analyze, implement, configure, manage, and support a high availability, multi-server LMS (Moodle) application environment and associated integrated systems and database applications.  This position will be a primary front- and back-end development resource across the LMS suite including, but not limited to, LMS servers, course archive server, asset server, associated website content and landing pages, course and content development tools, LMS plugins and custom code, and other integrated/related technology.  The LMS software engineer will be responsible for the installation, configuration, monitoring, and administration of the LMS, associated plugins, and servers.  The position will work closely with groups across CTY, JHU IT, and outside vendors to lead and support the LMS modernization and support projects. 


Responsible for full life cycle of medium to large sized complex projects; strong technical skills; strong ability to understand complex business processes. Develops solutions based on extensive technical knowledge, skills and experience; influences client towards innovative/integrated solutions.

  • Installation, configuration and administration of the LMS and associated plugins.
  • LMS server configuration, tuning, and monitoring.
  • Custom development to support advanced or unique functionality.
  • Complex integration via LTI, SAML, and other methods.
  • Advanced theming for custom look and feel supporting accessibility and responsive design.
  • Database administration, optimization, querying, and data transfer.
  • Testing, validation, launch, and support activities.
  • Contribute to UI/UX decisions and design.
  • Serve as technical expert involved in training, customer consultation, and documentation.
  • Provide technical support for instructors, students, and other LMS users.
  • Collect and analyze user requirements.
  • Translate business requirements into functional/technical specifications.
  • Follow industry and department best practices and policies for development work.
  • Identify, define, and prioritize tasks within sprints.
  • Effectively utilize issue tracking systems.
  • Tactical project management activities for assigned tasks and projects.
  • Research and evaluate new and emerging technology associated with the LMS.
  • Work collaboratively with other IT teams across CTY and JHU.
  • Work with minimal supervision in a deadline driven environment.
  • Cultivate and maintain a thorough understanding of CTY and Johns Hopkins mission, perspective, function, and strategy.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Additional experience may be substituted for education.
  • Five years of related work experience with computer systems and applications. Additional education may substitute for experience requirement in accordance with the JHU equivalency formula.

Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Drupal development or support experience.
  • Semantic markup, accessibility, version control.
  • Experience with H5P.
  • Experience in K-12, higher education, or academic medicine organization.
  • Experience upgrading and migrating legacy web applications.
  • Experience participating in Agile projects.
  • Familiarity with ColdFusion, Site Executive CMS.

Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge of recent versions of Moodle LMS including installation, tuning, theming, plugin configuration/administration, custom plugin/block development, security.
  • Expert knowledge of PHP and MySQL, PHP frameworks.
  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS (w/ preprocessing), JavaScript, Typescript, Bootstrap.
  • Experience with integration via Web Services and API’s.
  • Experience with Linux server configuration/administration.
  • Experience with RESTful services, JS frameworks (Angular, React, Express).
  • Experience with configuring and troubleshooting LTI, SAML, and other authentication/integration methods.
  • Demonstrable experience with UI and UX principles, concepts, and techniques.
  • Demonstrable success on Moodle projects as a technical lead or senior individual contributor.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Internal and External Contacts Required as part of the job:

  • This position will be regarded as a senior technical resource and may be involved in training, recommending solutions, customer consultation, and end-user documentation.
  • This position works at a high level of technical expertise and independence and will interact with internal, external, and public contacts.

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.
