Laboratory Manager

General Purpose: The individual will be responsible for the overall coordination of international and national clinical research laboratory testing for HIV persistence and drug resistance and specimen management.  The individual will work with the Principal Investigator to plan, manage, and conduct the required components for the research laboratory. They should be a proficient researcher with emphasis on CLIA/CAP related laboratory testing, coordination of sample receipt, shipping and storage with an understanding of laboratory information systems. Oversees a variety of both routine and complex clinical and research HIV laboratory tests, including molecular testing and tissue culture assays in accordance with established standards and procedures. This individual will be expected to have existing knowledge of good laboratory practices, and have a level of knowledge to properly execute and analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical. Will oversee the coordinate testing, shipping and storage activities with other laboratory staff.




Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Responsible for efficient utilization of assigned resources, planning and development of new testing, quality assurance, development and administration of laboratory budget.
  • Responsible for preparation and monitoring compliance of the assigned laboratory area for CLIA, Joint Commission and other laboratory regulatory agencies.
  • Supervise, orient, train, and assess competencies of laboratory staff. Ensure appropriate documentation per regulatory requirements.
  • Direct the specification, design, implementation and modification of projects related to the assigned laboratory.
  • Analytical ability to resolve complex technical, human resource and administrative problems.
  • Performs a variety of both routine and complex HIV related clinical and/or research laboratory tests and HIV coculture in accordance with established standards and procedures. Assures that QC are handled in the appropriate manner and follows QA documentation
  • Specimen Management including importation, documentation, sample storage and report test results. Complete required logs and supporting documents. Use LDMS and Excel database. 


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field required.
  • 5 years related experience.
  • Proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred qualifications:


  • Ten years’ experience in lab specialty.
  • Clinical laboratory experience and progressive leadership experience preferred.



Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience conducting molecular and tissue culture work and performing other ELISA-based assays. 
  • Advanced knowledge of good lab practices required. Individual must work independently, under minimal supervision with strong decision making skills and good judgment.
  • Working knowledge of CAP and CLIA regulations and CLSI procedure formats applicable in a clinical lab. 
  • Advanced knowledge of good laboratory practices. 
  • Individual must work independently under minimal supervision with strong decision making skills and good judgement.
  • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail and World Wide Web.
  • Work requires precision and attention to detail.
  • Individual should have strong written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments.
  • Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory.
  • Strong working knowledge of computers, skilled in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, file organization, and internet research. 
  • Working knowledge of GCLP, CAP, CLIA regulations and CLSI procedure formats applicable to a clinical lab.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
