Laboratory Manager

We are seeking a Laboratory Manager who will be responsible for managing the overall operation of the Viral Hepatitis Research Laboratory. The individual will work with the co-manager to manage the laboratories of nine Principal Investigators who work closely together and share projects. The individual will manage, supervise, and conduct experiments of the Viral Hepatitis Research Laboratory.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with PIs to hire laboratory personnel for projects.
  • Supervision and training of technicians, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students; assigns and coordinates tasks in partnership with PIs; assesses. productivity/performance; monitors interval work attendance for all lab personnel.
  • Supervises re-training and/or maintenance of training for all lab personnel.
  • Lab maintenance
    • Prepare and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
    • Order lab supplies and work with grants administrator to track laboratory spending on grants.
    • Maintain lab supplies, purchases, and related records.
    • Maintain records of attendance at regulatory/training sessions.
    • Maintain equipment service calls, contracts, and forms.
    • Track laboratory derived data and results.
    • Prepare for inspections.
  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigators to oversee scientific management of the research laboratory including projects utilizing human tissue specimens.
  • Supervises daily lab operations.
  • Repository management.
    • Establish new repositories as needed for emerging viral infections related to the laboratory goals.
  • Supervises freezer and liquid nitrogen tank maintenance, troubleshooting, contracts-service, and ad hoc contingencies.
  • Develop plans to accomplish work operations and objectives; arrange and assign work to use resources efficiently.
  • Plan, develop and execute research operations; arrange and assign work to best use research project funds.
  • Manages external lab contracts (including billing) and supervises completion of the work requested in those contracts.
  • Achieve a high level of professional/scientific skill and/or knowledge in specific area(s) and keep up with current developments and trends in area(s) of expertise.
  • Knowledge of scientific concepts, principles, practices and methods used to conduct or manage sound research; serves as a resource on technical and program-related issues for staff and others.
  • Knowledge of related technology, instruments and equipment.
  • Works with Principal Investigator to design, conduct, and analyze scientific experiments and to help with manuscript and grant preparation.
  • Provide oversight of technical programs and administrative activities in the laboratory including quality assurance and safety programs, coordinates and manages facilities, equipment, supplies and related resources.
  • Monitors environmental risks and quality control; understands and complies with safety standards to maintain a safe environment.
  • Plan and monitor the use of expenditures to meet organizational objectives and compliance; prepares budget documents and reports; systematically plans and monitors research project expenditures.
  • Lab documentation, responsible for supervising lab record keeping and inspecting lab personnel record keeping maintaining clear standards.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Five years related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $54,080-$74,390 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

*JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
