Laboratory Technician

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to assist with large-animal resuscitation experiments, daily animal care, and maintenance of lab equipment. We anticipate there may be opportunities for bench research techniques and assays in the future.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The technician will conduct all swine laboratory activities in compliance with our Animal Care and Use Committee-approved protocols and safety protocols. 
  • Humanely caring for pigs including receiving, feeding, daily care, and post-operative monitoring.
  • Assisting with experimental preparation and protocols including anesthetizing pigs, performing surgeries such as arterial and venous access, injecting medications, obtaining blood samples, performing cardiac arrest and resuscitation protocols.
  • Sacrificing animals and processing tissues at experimental end points.
  • Maintaining lab equipment.
  • Maintaining lab area and cleaning labware.
  • Ordering/restocking laboratory supplies.
  • Teaching surgical techniques related to experimental protocol and basic laboratory procedures to other technicians, research fellows, residents and students.
  • Performing data entry and ensuring complete and accurate database entry.
  • Communicating with and assisting Principal Investigator in reviewing and managing study data.
  • Preparing laboratory reagents necessary for tissue processing.
  • Attending monthly lab meetings and giving oral updates on work.
  • Attending courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, radioactive, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials.
  • In the future, role will likely include some basic science techniques including ELISA assay and immunohistochemistry of tissue.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred
  • Certificate from a technical institute or internship experience preferred.
  • Some experience working with large animal models is preferred.
  • Experience with ELISA and/or immunohistochemistry is helpful.

Starting Salary Range: $15.40 - $23.25 HRLY ($20,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
