Laboratory Technician

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician whose position is to conduct wet geochemistry analyses on water or powdered samples (from rock or sediment). This position will be responsible for, but no limited to the following tasks: (1) creating inventories of samples with identifying information, (2) conducting concentration determination analyses, (3) preparing and purifying samples for isotope analyses, (4) weighing samples for isotope analyses, and (5) conducting sediment incubations. They must be able to use basic wet chemistry tools (e.g., pipettes, centrifuges, analytical balances to make standards). They must also adhere to lab safety procedures and promote a culture of safe lab working conditions. They will be responsible for taking detailed notes on activities in the lab and updating lab method documents, as necessary. They will be working at the direction of Dr. Maya Gomes and the lab manager.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Preparing samples for concentration determinations and analyses.
  • Recording detailed information about the work performed.
  • Performing analyses in conjunction with the laboratory manager.
  • Writing or copy-editing method documents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent with some science coursework.
  • Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred. Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Either have worked in a laboratory setting where they were required to work independently and take notes or have a working familiarity laboratory procedures and necessary documentation (although training on specific procedures will be provided).

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
