Laboratory Technician

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to join Kannan’s Laboratory at the Center for Nanomedicine in Wilmer Eye Institute. The Laboratory Technician will perform routine lab processes and follow routine protocols under close supervision to maintain the general laboratory. He/She will work with all members of the lab and will assist in chemical synthesis and validation of dendrimer nanoparticle-drug conjugates for pain and mental health applications as well as in general laboratory maintenance under Biosafety levels 1 and 2.

The applicant will be responsible for general maintenance of the laboratory and follow good laboratory practice and reasonable housekeeping procedures by standard operating procedures and health, safety, and environmental policies.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include chemical synthesis and validation of dendrimer nanoparticle-drug conjugates for pain and mental health applications, basic tissue culture, basic molecular biology, basic microbiology or other techniques in which they will be trained under Biosafety Levels 1 and 2 conditions.
  • Maintain an organized, detailed record of experimental data.
  • Monitor inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies.
  • Will handle hazardous and bio-hazardous material under Biosafety Levels 1 and 2 conditions.
  • Interact with faculty, lab and administrative staff, students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Meet weekly with designated laboratory staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols and prioritize new experiments.
  • Demonstrate organization, curiosity, problem solving, resourcefulness, and flexibility.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent with some science coursework.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
  • Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
