Landscape Tech - HSC

We are seeking a Landscape Technician – HSC who maintains the grounds on campus, including planting and maintaining trees, turf, shrubs, and flowers as assigned by the ground's manager/supervisor. Assist with the clearing of snow and ice from campus.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage hardscape installation team and project.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the grounds manager under the directive of the ground supervisor. May assist with mowing, trimming, and edging of turf.
  • Plant/remove trees, shrubs, and perennial plants on campus. Mulching, watering, weeding, and seasonal plantings of all beds.
  • Assist team during snow season, shoveling and clearing snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, steps, and any other area(s) that may be required.
  • Observe all safety precautions and use equipment and chemical treatments properly to avoid harming self and others and damaging property.
  • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition. Able to stand for a period of time, bending and on knees while planting and digging holes
  • Operate and maintain various mechanical equipment, including trucks, tractors, and specialized garden tools, which are required to maintain botanical specimens.
  • Serve as an institution-wide resource for increasing the level of excellence in all aspects of horticulture and landscape maintenance and planning.
  • Assist other team members as required in a variety of tasks.
  • Visit local nurseries, landscape supply houses, chemical supply companies, and equipment to obtain necessary items for our job.
  • Assist local community organizations in grounds preservation efforts.



Minimum Qualifications
  • High school Diploma or graduation equivalent preferred.
  • Three years of work experience as a groundskeeper.
  • Maryland Pesticide Application License preferred.
  • An appropriate valid driver's license with a good driving record is preferred. Ability to drive a light truck preferred.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, small tractors, and others used in groundskeeping work.
  • Knowledge of proper planting procedures. Ability to work outdoors during all 4 seasons.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs. On an infrequent basis, you may need to lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or otherwise move about campus continuously.
  • Ability to ascend/descend ladders periodically to perform landscape maintenance.
  • Ability to work overtime when necessary.
  • Ability to interact and/or work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and write to maintain records and work schedules and to read work orders.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by JHU equivalency formula.

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
