Library Specialist, Access Services

 

General Summary/Purpose:

The Sheridan Libraries are seeking an innovative, self-starting, creative, user-focused library specialist to join our team delivering services to students and faculty across multiple JHU academic divisions.  THIS IS A 2-YEAR LIMITED TERM POSITION.

 

Provide user-centered services to connect users with the content they need, whether it’s available at JHU or beyond.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve patrons of many backgrounds in person, on the phone and in writing efficiently while remaining friendly and calm in all interactions.
    • Communicate information and resolve problems proficiently and accurately through quick problem solving and reasoning.
    • Conduct complex conversations with instructors to provide accurate access to course materials.
    • Troubleshoot and solve both commonly encountered and unusual problems.
    • Collaborate with staff, other departments, offsite facilities and institutions to identify, correct, and solve a variety of problems, inquiries, and requests.
    • Assist and answer questions regarding the library’s collection, policies and services.
    • Apply good judgment, civility, and problem solving skills.
    • Maintain integrity and respect confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Manage patron and course information through the use of secure databases.
    • Create, amend, verify, use and protect private patron information in the university and library systems for circulation, billing, user privileges, contact information and additional business purposes.
    • Utilize confidential university databases to create and reconcile copyright fees for material uses beyond fair use.
    • Establish secure access to course materials for authorized instructors and students.
  • Create access to library materials to support research and course instruction.
    • Ensure the proper flow and availability of library materials to users promptly and accurately.
    • Organize and fill patron requests, research inaccurate citations, and refer patrons to appropriate resources.
    • Understand fundamentals of copyright and fair use, especially to support interlibrary services and course instruction; evaluate materials to determine the need for permission requests.
    • Collaborate with acquisitions staff to purchase or replace materials identified through interlibrary services and course reserves.
    • Provide instruction on how to use the online catalog and electronic resources.
    • Supply information on how to use physical library equipment and how to navigate the stacks.
  • Master current systems, platforms, databases, and digital resources.
    • Use multiple systems to circulate materials, create access to and manage archives of electronic readings, and request/supply materials not available at JHU.
    • Test, use, and maintain organizational tools to support efficiency and timeliness for self and team.
    • Search full-content databases and digital resources to identify needed materials and create accurate and permanent links. 
    • Understand basic licensing terms and digital rights management.
  • Support policies, training, workflow, projects, and change.
    • Assist in the preparation, establishment, and revision of library training materials.
    • Understand workflows: organize independent work to contribute to department’s delivery of services and to advance department’s goals.  Contribute to conversations about best practices.
    • Coordinate and help manage department projects independently and in teams.
    • Aid in the training, supervision, and scheduling of student employees.
    • Report and help rectify any internal problems or disputes.
    • Pursue professional development:  attend courses, seminars, and webinars. Participate in training, team-building, and other activities.
    • Share ideas, policies, and procedures among colleagues.

 

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional experience can be substituted for experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred

Incumbents will be required to work occasional evenings, weekends and holidays.

Starting Salary Range: $17.42 - $23.95 per hour

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
