Life Income Gift Manager


The Life Income Manager is a member of the Office of Gift Planning (OGP) for Johns Hopkins University and Medicine. This central unit of the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DAR) is responsible for management, execution and oversight of all life income gift activities for Johns Hopkins. The position reports to the Gift   handles the administration of all life income gifts (charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, pooled income funds, and outside managed trusts) to Johns Hopkins, and provides support on life income gifts to its affiliated hospitals.




I.         NEW GIFT SUPPORT (35%)


  • Serves as primary contact for repeat life income gift donors throughout the gift process.
  • Produces gift planning calculations, correspondence, and other necessary materials needed by donors, their advisors, or internal colleagues.
  • Prepares final gift illustrations, tax documentation, and annuity contracts for all life income gifts for the office. Coordinates preparation and signature of contracts.
  • Provides instructions and monitors transfer of securities to fund life income gifts; alerts Gift Planning staff if donor is interested in funding a life income gift with complex assets.
  • Works with outside counsel to provide appropriate documentation to donors who make a gift of their income interest in life income gifts.
  • Responds to incoming new gift inquiries to the office when appropriate Gift Planning Staff is unavailable.




  • Oversees the administration of all life income gifts (charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, pooled income funds, and outside managed trusts) to Johns Hopkins Institutions (both the University and Hospital) for routine matters.
  • Serves as the office's primary liaison for routine matters with vendor (Kaspick in Boston) that assists Johns Hopkins with the management and investment of its life income gifts.
  • Provides Office of the Treasurer, Chief Investment Officer, General Accounting, and audit team with information necessary for life income gift reporting.
  • Coordinates annual report to trust donors; responds to all inquiries from life income gift donors who have questions about their payments, documentation, or banking information.
  • Upon termination of life income gifts, coordinates severance of gift, asset transfer to assure that school/division receives proper amount due to it, gift and tax documentation, collection of beneficiary payments and all other matters concerning the termination of all life income gifts.
  • Coordinates charitable gift annuity registration with vendor and internal and outside colleagues. This includes preparation of annual and quarterly reports to states that require registration to keep the University compliant.
  • Tracks all outside managed trusts.




  • Assists with the strategy and implementation of ongoing gift planning initiatives, including:
    • Annual Gift Annuity Solicitation: Assists the OGP's marketing team with annual solicitation of current gift annuity donors.
    • Training: Along with other members of the OGP, conducts/assists with semi-annual training class for DAR colleagues on life income gifts.
  • Prepares timely and accurate monthly gift activity report for OGP; supplies critical, detailed data for OGP's annual reporting.
  • Serves as a resource to team members about various gift planning vehicles, asset transfers and audit issues and other matters.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.




  • Bachelor's degree required with a minimum of  two years of relevant experience.



  • Able to work with minimal supervision, manage projects and determine priorities, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with broadly diverse groups of constituents including donors, alumni, patients, faculty, professional advisors, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues and institutional leadership.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and time management skills to successfully handle a wide variety of responsibilities.
  • Understands complex institutional environments.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
