Linux Systems Engineer

The Network Engineer position performs a critical role supporting the Linux technical needs of the Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) customers. This requires a dynamic process and solutions oriented individual. These attributes are basic and fundamental to all aspects of the technical nature of this position.


The preferred candidate will be a full-time technical resource with a shared responsibility for Linux operating systems, infrastructure software, open systems platform and Linux servers supported by Office of Advancement Services (OAS). Responsibilities include implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the infrastructure supporting OAS applications and servers. This role provides support to technical teams throughout OAS by collaborating on systems status; including system changes, problems, enhancements and potential impacts. Additional responsibilities include maintaining system design, network, and application level troubleshooting. Candidates must possess strong problem solving, analytical and communications skills. The successful candidate will have strong technical competence, an ability to learn fast, and the ability to utilize available resources to resolve complex problems.


The candidate must exhibit an ability to work closely with support personnel and developers within Office of Advancement Services (OAS) as well as customers within the DAR organization. The candidate will work independently, functioning with project teams in OAS as warranted.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Significant Linux System Administrator experience in an enterprise environment
  • The ability to install Operating Systems and associated software
  • Ensure service availability, reliability, & monitoring.
  • Qualifications LAMP Stack, bash shell, Linux internals, Red Hat , specific knowledge in SSL, RUN level 3 CMD line interface, ACL’s, HTTP configuration ( apache ),SSL, sudo ,SFTP.
  • Experience with supporting systems with 500+ users and multiple applications.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies for automating deployments and other processes.
  • Ability to tune system performance and ensure high availability of department infrastructure.
  • Work with project manager and other implementation teams to coordinate and troubleshoot implementation issues.
  • Create and maintain complete system documentation.
  • Implement a schedule of system backups and archive operations by using best practices for the environment to ensure data/media recoverability.
  • Design and/or integrate security authorization and access control. Document the process and audit to ensure compliance.
  • Follow change management policies and procedures in order to deliver a successful solution to the customer.
  • Communicate risk factors to team members and clients.
  • Site and/or server provisioning and administration in both VMWare and Azure.
  • Regular system, application, and database maintenance or patching.
  • Assist with the management of SSL certificates of all sites both internal and public facing websites running Drupal and WordPress on Red Hat 7.x and 8.x
  • Assist with migrating legacy web applications over to modern, containerized hosting solutions.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three years of related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience with Systems Administration with a minimum of 4 years’ experience managing Linux Systems in mission critical, production environment
  • Experience working for ecommerce companies with high transaction environments
  • Experience with web application servers such as apache and tomcat
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and implement complex infrastructure
  • Experience in use of virtualization/VMWare and Azure.
  • Expert knowledge of Linux Environments (RHEL, Centos, Oracle Linux etc.)
  • Expert with Red hat satellite for updates
  • Knowledge of Open Source technologies
  • Experience with Unix Shell and/or Perl scripting and PHP
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to think creatively under pressure
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Understanding of Agile project management principles
  • Experience with AZURE administration & migration; and Nagios, Splunk logging and alert monitoring
  • Salesforce admin experience is desirable
