Manager of Digital Collections as Data

 

General Summary/Purpose:

The Manager of Digital Collections as Data will develop a vision for and implement a program of digital collections as data. The Manager will provide leadership in further development and management of the Institutional Repository (“JScholarship”), direct digitization services including developing services for use of digitization services beyond the library, and collaborate with other Library departments to build strong digital collections that showcase Johns Hopkins unique resources.  In particular, the Manager will focus on the growing set of resources and recommendations related to collections as data from the Always Already Computational project. The Manager will manage policies for digital content, identify trends and develop effective solutions, collaborations, and partnerships that advance the current and further needs of JHU’s scholars, particularly in relation to creating digital collections and services for machine learning. Promote innovation, scholarship, and learning.  Develop plans and resources to scale the Libraries’ digital imaging and digital preservation capacities. Facilitate the exploration of new methodologies enabled by digital technology, the analysis and management of complex data, the visualization of theoretical relationships, and sharing of research results. Partner with other Library staff in order to deliver programs and services.  Work closely with the Data Management Directorate and act as Product Owner for collections related software development.  Develop outreach strategies in close collaboration with public services and data services units to promote digital collections. Initiate strong working relationships with departments across campus in order to identify current and emerging scholarly projects for which digital tools and methodologies are appropriate. Participates in the planning of digital repositories that serve campus- and university-wide needs, focusing in particular on how to best leverage these tools to support a robust scholarly communications ecosystem. Develops and supports campus-based digital collections hosted in digital repository systems and other platforms used by JHU scholars.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage the JHU institutional repository. Communicate with academic departments about services, train staff in participating communities, make recommendations about deposit policies, evaluate and set priorities for library digital projects.
  • Conceive, develop, and implement projects and services that advance use of digital collections as data.
  • Identify scholarly and societal trends and develop effective solutions, collaborations, and partnerships - especially in the area of digitization, digital scholarship, machine learning, digital preservation that advance the current and future needs of JHU scholars.
  • Ensure that the Libraries digital holdings and services are widely and conveniently accessible and preserved through the Libraries digital infrastructure, HathiTrust, APTrust and other commonly used resources.
  • Provide advice and consultation to units across the University as appropriate and within the scope of the position and organization.
  • Contribute to Libraries-wide planning especially related to information technologies and infrastructure.
  • Manage inter-departmental project teams and may manage departmental staff.
  • Provide overall leadership of library digitization services. Plan for equipment and software needs, establish imaging and preservation standards, and prioritize work of the unit. May supervise personnel in the unit.
  • Maintain an inventory of all digital collections including product owner, project name, URL, type of content, technical platform, rights status, discoverability, downloadability, and links to collection-specific policies for content selection/deselection, preservation, and metadata. Add new fields to the inventory as needed to ensure a robust accounting of all collections including definitions of all data components.
  • Influence Johns Hopkins Library Directors Council regarding digital collections and act as advocate for JScholarship within Johns Hopkins University by explaining digital initiatives and soliciting feedback and suggestions; engage and influence faculty regarding appropriate digital collections and services (in collaboration with existing liaison librarians).
  • Evaluate in an on-going manner and revise the systems, processes and workflows of current digital initiatives.
  • Research and maintain awareness and develop in-depth knowledge of new technology, relevant national standards and best practices, assessing and integrating these into library practices for best results as appropriate.
  • Serve on Collection Management Council to represent the interests of digital initiatives.
  • Represent the digital initiatives of Johns Hopkins University through presentations and articles.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master’s level degree in either library science, information science, or equivalent discipline. Three years professional library or other related experience required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years’ experience in digital collections development and project leadership strongly preferred.
  • Programming experience; supervisory experience; experience with digital archives, project management; course management systems, electronic publishing systems, and content and data modeling, particularly related to the Fedora repository platform.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational, project management,  interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven experience with and knowledge of digitization and digital preservation standards and best practices, metadata standards, repository systems.
  • Familiarity with programming, especially related to open-source technologies.
  • Familiarity with scholars’ needs and use of digital content and services.
  • Knowledge of usability studies, copyright issues and writing requirements for digital projects.
  • Academic experience, especially in working with faculty. Must possess the ability to convey technical concepts in understandable ways to non-technical staff, faculty, and students.
  • Advanced cultural competency that demonstrates an interest in participating in and leading discussions, initiatives, and collection development activities that reflect diversity and inclusion issues relevant to students, faculty, staff, and the community.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
