Mental Health Services Clinician, Liaison to Undergraduate Residences and Center for Recreation
Student Health and Well-being (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic, organized, and motivated Mental Health Services (MHS) Clinician, Liaison to Undergraduate Residences and Center for Recreation to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the well-being of a diverse community of learners.
This role will be embedded in the Ralph O’Connor Center for Recreation and Well-Being and undergraduate residential spaces while maintaining a strong connection to the Mental Health Services interdisciplinary team. The unique nature of this role supports strong collaboration with non-clinical case management and athletic mental performance staff to support student athletes, as well as opportunities to co-create outreach and mental health programs with partners in recreation and in the undergraduate residences. As with all staff within Mental Health Services, this clinician will operate as a generalist who provides a full range of clinical services, including initial consultations, individual goal-directed therapy, workshops, groups, and crisis intervention.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- This position’s direct clinical service responsibilities will be split between the Ralph O’Connor Center for Recreation and Well-being and space in the undergraduate residences and may provide some virtual services in Washington, D.C., depending on clinic needs.

Direct Clinical Service (60-65%, based on demand and clinic needs)
- Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal, academic, and professional goals.
- Provides direct clinical services, including goal-oriented approaches to initial consultations, intake assessments, single-session therapy, individual counseling, group and relationship counseling, and crisis intervention.
- Utilizes both flexible and goal-oriented approaches to individual treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and interpersonal therapy, often in collaboration with treating psychiatrists.
- Collaborates with providers within SHWB as an interdisciplinary treatment team, including therapists, psychiatric providers, primary care clinicians, case management, and disability services staff.
- Collaborates with non-clinical case manager and athletics mental performance staff to provide clinical interventions to scholar-athletes.
- Provides drop-in and single-session interventions to undergraduate students in on-campus residences and supports transition and referrals to other clinical services within the Mental Health Services portfolio.
- Consults, as appropriate, with providers in the community to facilitate continuity of care.
Outreach (25-30%)
- Develops and delivers psycho-educational workshops and other presentations for JHU students and learners with a special emphasis on scholar-athletes and undergraduate students in on-campus residences.
- Develops and facilitates opportunities for informal interactions with students to reduce barriers to counseling, which may include offering drop-in and chat hours, attending student events, and participating in a range of student-led and student-focused programs.
- Serve as a key liaison for scholar-athletes, helping them connect with mental health resources and receive referrals from both athletes and all undergraduate students seeking mental health services in embedded spaces.
- Maintains a visible presence through participation in outreach and educational activities, including resource fairs, heritage events, and community activities.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of mental health resource needs for scholar-athletes and undergraduates living in on-campus residential spaces through collaborations with students, campus partners, and the broader community of JHU to help reduce barriers to counseling and mental health services.
- Collaborates with the athletics department to develop and execute mental health screenings for scholar-athletes by NCAA guidelines.
- Consults with on-campus residence life staff to support programs and interventions for students living in on-campus housing.
- Contributes to content for Mental Health Services' social media and website.
- Works collaboratively with the departments of Athletics, Recreation and Physical Education, and On-Campus Living to develop a network of support services to proactively address the holistic well-being needs of scholar-athlete and residential undergraduate populations.
Collaborative and Other Activities (10-20%)
- Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidence-based intervention strategies.
- Participates in Mental Health Services staff meetings, events, and staff activities to maintain close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams that provide services to JHU student and learner populations.
- Contributes to the professional development of trainees and SHWB staff through the provision of didactic training and seminars.
- Participates in case consultation, student risk management, peer chart reviews, and other departmental committees as directed.
- Participates in clinical training programs; licensed psychologists will enter the pool of available individual supervisors for the APA-approved psychology internship training program after 2 years of post-licensure experience.
- Works collaboratively with campus partners to support both the clinical and programmatic needs of students and learners.
- Participates in MHS recruitment and hiring processes.
- Completes documentation and administrative duties in accordance with MHS policies and procedures.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to create and develop new programs with a level of independence and initiative.
- Experience independently executing psycho-educational presentations, programs, and events for a wide audience.
- Specialized training, interest, and/or experience working with student athletes.
- Experience working in embedded locations with limited on-site administrative support.
- Clinical experience in a university setting is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with scholar-athletes is strongly preferred.

- Schedule
- This is a 37.5 hour/week position. Two evening clinics per week (until 7pm) may be required; additional flexible schedule options may be available, including evenings and weekends/alternative schedules
- This position requires occasional evening and weekend work dependent on the programmatic needs of the University and for activities during the academic year (orientation, special events, etc.)
- This is a 5 day per week, in-person position
- This is a 12-month position, year-round position
- This position is designated as a Required Attendance Employee, designated as vital to the operation of a work group, so may be required to work during a university closure in response to operational needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, or social work from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 2 years post-graduate clinical experience.
- Independently licensed as a mental health provider in primary required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description prior to start date; licensure in additionally required jurisdiction(s) required within 6 months of hire.
Substitution/Equivalency
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology from an APA accredited program and completion of an APA internship. If eligibility is based on a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology, post-grad experience is not required to meet the minimum qualifications. Recent doctoral graduate hires must obtain licensure as a psychologist in a minimum of one required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description within 12 months of hire; licensure in additional required jurisdictions required within 2 years of hire.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an accredited program.
- Licensed as a psychologist in required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description or license-eligible. (must obtain licensure in required jurisdiction(s) within 6 months of hire)
- Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.
