Multimedia Specialist



The Multimedia Specialist works as part of a team comprised to support a Media Lab and Maker Space dedicated to helping students explore the creative use of emerging media and technology to communicate their ideas. The Specialist will assist students with technically challenging personal or academic projects involving media based communications. They will design and teach workshops, organize special events, and work 1-on-1 to support student needs. In addition, they will work with and supervise a student staff team on departmental projects. As needed, they will research, analyze and make equipment purchasing recommendations, maintain tools and pioneer new digital art-making technologies through project exploration with students.


The Digital Media Center is part of Student Life/Student Engagement unit, whose programming is focused on co-curricular activities that provide opportunities for students to build communities and engage meaningfully with staff and peers in a wide variety of ways. The DMC supports students with personal, creative, entrepreneurial, academic, and campus engagement projects.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This position works closely with the other Multimedia Specialist and Program Coordinator whose joint expertise cover a wide variety of art, communication, and media disciplines and skills. Assignment of specific areas of responsibility is based on the totality of disciplines that need to be covered and prior interest and expertise of the current staff.
  • Design and teach 2-hour evening hands-on workshops to small groups of students using multimedia hardware and software.
  • Plan, organize, and run special events such as guest artist talks, and collaborate with other departments and student groups on activities relating to university signature events.
  • Support student needs with 1-on-1 project consultations.
  • Research and make purchasing recommendations on specialized equipment related to your discipline expertise.
  • Maintain discipline specific equipment, tools and work spaces related to your discipline expertise.
  • Promote and document DMC programming.
  • Research and explore new technologies.
  • Proactively learn new software and stay current with technology trends.
  • Other duties as assigned.



The successful candidate will be able to:

Learn new information independently and be comfortable experimenting with new technologies, have strong written and verbal communication skills, be organized and able to work efficiently while juggling multiple projects. Must have superior interpersonal skills and be able to take the initiative to reach out to a diverse student body. Able to demonstrate evidence of personal design aesthetic through portfolio of past professional and academic projects.



  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably an arts degree. Masters of Fine Arts degree preferred.



  • Two years related experience required. Five years related experience preferred, including prior teaching experience at the college level. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred skills:

Extensive knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, DSLR camera equipment and fine-art photo printers. Knowledge of audio and music production and recording. Knowledge of web design, HTML/CSS and iOS development/app programming a plus.


Work Schedule:

This 4-day / 32 hour per week position requires two week days 9 – 5:30pm and two week days in the 3pm - 9pm range. Evening and weekend events are scheduled throughout the academic year (September – May). This position is structured to support a working artist who maintains an active creative life outside of the center.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
