Multimedia Technician

We are seeking a Multimedia Technician who will report into the University Student Services IT team, and will be responsible for providing technical and operational support for video conferencing, hybrid work enablement, audio/visual (AV) equipment maintenance and presentation system support for the University Student Services division. The Multimedia Technician will assure quality service is provided in a fast-paced environment to our divisional customers and will work closely with other IT Services staff to create and implement AV system maintenance, upgrades, and equipment replacement cycles.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide extensive troubleshooting and testing of videoconferencing audiovisual equipment (videoconferencing, multimedia, audiovisual, projection systems, displays, cameras, microphones, integrated AV systems, streaming technologies, etc.) and collaboration tools (Teams, Zoom, etc.).
  • Maintain and update departmental conference room AV hardware, including Crestron systems, workstations, cameras, microphones, etc.
  • Address and troubleshoot customer issues received via helpdesk, email and phone, as well as through monitoring tools, for videoconferencing endpoints, infrastructure, integrated AV systems and networks. 
  • Respond to troubleshooting situations in an efficient, calm manner and provide direct client support in a timely fashion.
  • Consult with clients to determine AV and multimedia equipment needs for small to medium sized installations, including consultation with internal service providers and external vendors when needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring equipment is properly inventoried in our divisional asset management system. 
  • Expected to support customers, AV systems and events primarily located on/near the Homewood Campus, with occasional travel to locations or campuses within the Baltimore area.
  • Closely collaborate with campus-wide AV support teams for event support, system design/replacement efforts and other tasks as required.
  • Document incidents, including opening case, updating with current status and timely closure.
  • Test, configuration, and troubleshooting of IP networks in support of videoconferencing and AV equipment.
  • Coordinate and schedule equipment testing and pre-checks in advance of high visibility events.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Four (4) years of related experience.
  • Do you have AV/ multimedia or IT support field.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated knowledge of collaboration applications such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. 
  • This position requires a clean driving record and valid driver’s license.
  • Occasional travel to locations or campuses within the Baltimore area may be required. 
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*


JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of event sound setup, knowledge of Apple and Windows operating systems, Apple and Dell laptops, basic networking concepts, video and audio recording and editing, mixers, amplifiers, speakers, microphones, video projectors.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Occasional evenings and weekend hours required. 

  • Ability to be on feet for long periods of time; ability lift up to 50 lbs and to be able to work at heights to approximately 20 ft.

  • Experience with supporting Crestron, Cisco or Extron AV control systems and related components, a well-rounded understanding of Microsoft365 applications.
  • Detailed understanding of equipment, methods and techniques used in videoconferencing and streaming media events.
  • Must be well organized, reliable, and able to work as an integral part of a team effort with outstanding written and verbal communication skills necessary.
  • Must be able to quickly diagnose and solve routine technical issues and independently make well-reasoned technical decisions in high visibility situations.

On Call Requirements:

  • Occasional compensated on-call coverage may be required for event support.
