Network Security Engineer

 

General Summary/Purpose:

Under moderate direction from the manager or more senior level engineering staff, provides technical support for hardware and software elements and processes of the network security infrastructure.  Principally responsible for direct support for 1-3 Network Security subsystems and general support of other security tools.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Duties and responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):
  • Implements recommended changes to address problems that are moderately complex in nature i.e. departmental firewall changes.
  • Assists customer with security related issues that are simple to moderately complex in nature.
  • Manages minor systems upgrades and patching for network security systems.
  • Participates in large projects and /or complex network changes through implementation of assigned tasks.
  • Identifies and administers ongoing system changes and life cycle management for assigned systems.
  • Participates in on call support rotation and may act as a point of escalation for lower level technicians.
  • Monitors network security systems for anomalies and/or activity that are suspicious in nature. 
  • Informs senior level staff and management of problems.
  • Will be required to work off hours as needed in support of changes of the environment as well as on-call responsibilities.

 

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2 years experience in the area of Network and Information Security. Must have proven technical skills and demonstrated troubleshooting skills. Strong communication skills both written and verbal. Good customer services skills.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. (30 undergraduate degree credits/semester hours or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science (or related field).

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have proven technical skills and demonstrated troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Good customer services skills.

 

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

  • Sit – 85%
  • Walk – 10%
  • Stand – 5%
  • May be required to unpack, lift, and install networking equipment

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
