Nurse Practitioner

The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) who will report directly to the Nurse Practitioner Manager. The (SHWB) practice group supports well-being, primary care, and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. Our integrated service delivery model provides dynamic health and well-being promotion, support and programming, student disability services including guidance and resources, and in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support though phone and online resources.

The Nurse Practitioner is a full-time position in the Homewood Student Health & Wellness Center office with a requirement for availability to travel to other Baltimore area campuses and to the DC campus for service delivery and in-person meetings, when necessary. This may include being available on evenings and weekends for extended clinic hours, outreach programs and crisis or emergency response.

The NP works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to optimize patient outcomes and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age-appropriate primary care to the students/learners of Johns Hopkins University.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver care that is culturally competent, affirming of a wide range of student/learner identities, and promotes the diversity, equity and inclusion values of the Student Health and Well-Being practice.
  • Use evidence-based clinical and theoretical knowledge to identify acute and/or chronic health problems through a comprehensive, age-appropriate assessment of patients using skills in taking medical histories, screening, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, making diagnoses, prescribing appropriate medications and treatments.
  • Educate patients with a significant emphasis on health maintenance and preventative measures.
  • Provide continuity of care and coordination of available healthcare services using appropriate referral to agencies and specialists as indicated.
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff and departmental needs.
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for own patient care decisions. On a regular and continuous basis, exercise administrative judgment and assume responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
  • Participate in peer chart reviews and pass periodic laboratory proficiency testing and quality control reviews.
  • Systematically record information in an electronic medical record in accordance with state and federal medical/legal requirements.
  • Comply with state, federal and ambulatory accreditation requirements, and policies within SHWB.
  • Participate in SHWB Primary Care Committees.
  • Attend SHWB meetings and educational opportunities and show evidence of continued self-development and professional involvement by participating in activities and educational programs of professional organizations.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.


Special Skills, Knowledge or Abilities

  • Experience working with diverse patient populations and appreciate and relate effectively to individuals who hold multiple, intersecting identities including but not limited to historically marginalized and under-represented populations, various ages and developmental status, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, international status, disability, gender and sexual identities and presentations.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and facility in emails.
  • Knowledge of Excel.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required and on-going electronic medical records and scheduling system trainings as directed.
  • Ability to complete all required HIPAA, and any other specified online training courses deemed necessary.


Work Schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.; will include being available on limited evenings and weekends for extended clinic hours, outreach programs and crisis or emergency response.


Machines and/or Equipment Use

  • Daily use of personal computer, telephone, fax, photocopy and scan machines, and a variety of medical equipment.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.


Degree of Independent Action

  • Must possess the ability to function independently; supervision to be provided by the Nurse Practitioner Manager.


Internal & External Contacts 

  • Interacts with students and trainees from all Hopkins schools, as well as with faculty and staff of both the Hospital and University, and with mental health and medical professionals in the surrounding community.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing: Registered Nurse license and Certified as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure (within 6 months) to practice in the State of Maryland and Washington D.C.
  • Active or eligible for DEA and Controlled Dangerous Substances registrations.
  • Successful credentialing and privileging through Johns Hopkins Hospital and SHWB.
  • One to four years’ experience working in a college health setting or related field. 
  • Demonstrated competence in young adult health, public health, or college health.
  • Philosophical commitment to the care, development, and education of students and trainees.
  • Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications

 


**Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required.  Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.  Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date**

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
