Nurse Practitioner

The Department of Medicine seeks a Nurse Practitioner for the Bayview Palliative Care team in the Division of Bayview General Internal Medicine will work as a part of an interprofessional care team providing direct clinical support focused on the inpatient setting.

The responsibilities related to this role are below:

 

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality, direct inpatient clinical care at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where the candidate will specifically:
    • Perform bedside palliative care patient/family evaluations.  
    • Assist with diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic health conditions.  
    • Order, perform and interpret laboratory and radiology tests within scope of professional practice.  
    • Prescribe medications including controlled substances to the extent delegated and licensed.  
    • Order treatments and durable medical equipment as indicated.  
    • Perform other therapeutic or corrective measures as indicated, including urgent care.  
    • Consult with palliative care physician or designees as needed, inform primary physician of services provided and collaborates with other physicians as needed.  
    • Assist in all facets of care coordination for palliative care referrals.  
    • Prepare and maintain accurate patient records, charts, and documents to support sound medical practice and reimbursement for services provided.  
    • Comply with applicable laws and regulations with respect to collaborative agreements.  
    • Assist in development of clinical practice guidelines/standards in support of quality palliative care.  
  • Provides comprehensive and episodic care independently--and in collaboration with Physicians and other team members--to all new patients, follow-ups, and consultations, as needed.
  • Promptly responds to consult orders across applicable Bayview Medical Center units.
  • Promptly enters clinic notes and other pertinent data into EPIC as this is integral to the proper care of the patient. Communicates with and provides information to referring physicians.
  • Develops a synergistic relationship with internal stakeholders and floor staff across BMC units.
  • Will also be involved in the education initiatives of the program and will be responsible for contributing to the development of both trainees and practicing clinicians on the Bayview campus.
  • Works collegially and collaboratively with inter-professional palliative team including palliative chaplain, social worker, nurse, doctor, and clinical pharmacist.

Computer Knowledge Expectations

  • Operates personal computer to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software.
  • Successfully completes all necessary EPIC training courses and other applicable clinical software systems.
  • Completes all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.

 

Other duties may be assigned by the employee’s immediate clinical supervisor, Assistant Administrator for the Division, or a healthcare provider to ensure an efficient office that will assist the Division in fulfilling its mission.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.  Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree as permitted by the JHU Equivalency formula. Current CPR certification required.  Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.  Completion of the JHBMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.    

 

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) years of related Palliative Care Experience and/or Palliative care Certification

 

Additional Licensure and Certifications: 

  • Approval of /Maryland Board of Nursing for the written signed delegation agreement.
  • Controlled substance license

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with regulations and standards governing NPs in the state of Maryland.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability for self-direction and initiation required.  Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team required.  Demonstrated customer service skills required. Must be able to prioritize responsibilities and work in a fast-paced environment.

 

Physical Requirements: 

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
