Nurse Practitioner

The Addicition Medicine Department seeks a Nurse Practitioner  who will provide primary care services, including HIV and STD at the Comprehensive Care Practice and STD services at the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) STD clinic. Medical Care will include obtaining a medical history, performing appropriate physical examinations, assessing and resolving problems through appropriate medical management and managing prescription medications for patients. Accurate and timely documentation in the EMR.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Clinical Primary Care and STD:

  • Provide all aspects of primary care services to patients in the Comprehensive Care Practice, including treatment for HIV and Substance Use Disorder
  • Diagnose and manage STDs in both male and female patients who are primary care patients within the practice
  • Document and bill through use of the EPIC system
  • Provide counseling/prevention counseling for patients
  • Provide referrals to specialty providers
  • Maintain current NP licensure and CME requirements


Clinical STD:

  • Diagnose and manage STDs in both males and females who present episodically for evaluation and treatment. Provide prevention counseling
  • Maintain required documentation in the clinic EMR
  • Pre and post-test counseling of patients presenting for HIV testing
  • Offer immunizations as indicated
  • Maintain current NP licensure and CME requirements


Administrative and Miscellaneous:

  • Attend trainings as required for clinical proficiency
  • Maintain adequate documentation as per JHU and BCHD standards
  • Participate in clinical research by recruiting subjects and collecting samples as indicated


Minimum Qualifications:


Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.  Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree. Current CPR certification required.  Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.  Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.    


JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. 


Preferred Qualifications: Family Medicine or Adult Medicine CNPRelated work experience preferred but a recent graduate is acceptable (training provided).


Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to interact with culturally diverse patients, staff and community populations.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, multi-organizational team setting with a high degree of motivation and flexibility.
  • Prior experience with HIV and STD helpful.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow through.
  • Knowledge of spoken Spanish is preferred but not required.


Physical Requirements: 

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
