Nurse Practitioner

The Department of Medicine is seeking a Nurse Practitioner, to work collaboratively as a member of an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team to provide comprehensive care to patients on the Progressive Care Unit and the ambulatory setting for the Electrophysiology service. The APP will work collaboratively with physicians, fellows, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, social workers, physical, occupational and speech therapists, and consultant physicians within a multi-disciplinary team for the Department of Medicine.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for standardized, comprehensive care to patients with multiple medical conditions and post-operative patients.
  • Obtain history and perform physical examinations on patients newly admitted to the unit.
  • Follow-up pre and post-operative cardiology patients in the clinic.
  • Participate in daily rounds to report the progress of specific patients and help establish and implement care plans safely and effectively.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory tests, EKGs, radiographic exams, and other diagnostic studies.
  • Initiates or modifies routine, complex, and emergent medication regimens and therapies.
  • Perform device interrogations.
  • Communicate with healthcare team members to ensure patient and organizational needs are met.
  • Assist with coordinating the discharge of patients out of the hospital to various settings.
  • Educate patients and families regarding the nature of their clinical problems, prognoses, and options for continued care.
  • Regularly attends scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current knowledge of procedures, protocols, and clinical care issues.
  • Participate in hospital-wide and unit-based committees and meetings focusing on quality assurance and safety programs for the unit.

  • Must have advanced clinical skills and the ability to apply theoretical concepts as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team providing care to patients and their families.
  • Must have the ability to diagnose and implement a medical care plan for the short and long-term care of acute and chronic health conditions in the intensive care unit.
  • Be able to apply critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to function effectively and adapt to a dynamic and often changing work environment.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Possess advanced interpersonal skills necessary to collaborate and communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to enhance problem-solving in the best interest of the patient.
  • Provide detailed and comprehensive documentation of all patient care-related services as part of the hospital medical record.
  • Must have general computer knowledge and the ability to use computerized medical information systems.


Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a seated position for extended periods.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity is required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of clinical experience preferred.
  • IBHRE certification is desirable but not required.
