Nurse Practitioner

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to evaluate patients in the Intensive Treatment Unit, in accordance with established policies and clinical guidelines.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Patient Care

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric assessments of patients admitted to the AIDS Psychiatry Service.
  • Evaluate presence of psychiatric symptoms in the setting of substance use disorder and determine the need for transfer to a longer-term psychiatric service for management of serious chronic mental illness.
  • Conduct and obtain history of substance use and medical comorbidities.
  • Monitor patients for alcohol and substance withdrawal syndromes and prescribe medications as needed to ensure patient safety.
  • Coordinate with medical specialists to address comorbid medical conditions as indicated.
  • Develop a working knowledge of community-based substance abuse programs and services and participate in community outreach to improve patient access to these programs and services.
  • Providing evidence-based care based on the process, policies, procedures, and protocols of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
  • Works collaboratively with, and provides leadership for, a multidisciplinary health care team to optimize team performance and patient outcomes.
  • Coordinating care for a group of complex patients to achieve clinical and organizational outcomes.
  • Provide direct clinical care for patients at the time of initial evaluation for diagnostic assessment, urgent and walk-in care, and triage.
  • Documentation of psychological issues and needs identified during counseling sessions.
  • Documentation of medical issues and needs identified during counseling sessions.
  • Act as the medical liaison between the Psychiatry Clinic and the HIV medical providers.
  • Establish goals and objectives to meet the psychological needs of the patient in collaboration with other members of the mental health treatment team.
  • Maintain resource network for the purpose of referrals and consults that impact treatment progress of the patient.
  • Conduct ongoing counseling sessions as deemed clinically appropriate.
  • Provide patient education in all aspects of HIV disease, including how to cope with mental health issues and side effects of HIV and psychiatric medications.
  • Provide extensive medication adherence support, education, monitoring, and intervention if needed.
  • Collaborate with other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team to achieve stated goals for enhanced mental health and abstinence of substance use.
  • Complete appropriate clinical documentation.
  • If warranted administers medications, fluids, oxygen, as ordered by the provider; provides (or ensures access to) phlebotomy, IV insertion, and related services.
  • Participate in relevant training, clinical supervision, conferences, and multidisciplinary patient care.
  • Provide psychiatric services in coordination with the HIV/AIDS County Program in the following counties: Baltimore, Harford, Howard and Anne Arundel County.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Nurse Practitioner - Master's degree from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years direct patient care experience.
  • Must be certified and licensed as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience and knowledge in psychiatric and substance abuse disorders.
  • Proficient knowledge about chronic pain disorders.

Starting Salary Range: $100,000 - $152,900 Annually ($116,600 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
