General Summary:

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) seeks a creative, energetic and entrepreneurial individual to develop and implement cultural, social and educational programs – both campus-wide and in the Multicultural Student Center (MASC).   The Program Administrator, reporting to the assistant director, is responsible for working collaboratively within and Johns Hopkins campus community the OMA to develop and coordinate programmatic and efforts that foster an inclusive campus community for a broad range of constituents.  

The Program Administrator also promotes the OMA mission by developing and coordinating student programming; organizing cultural events; and working directly with campus-wide multicultural efforts and student organizations.  The position will collaborate with University Student Program boards (the Hop, etc.), faculty and staff on a robust set of campus-wide diversity programming initiatives, such as cultural heritage month celebrations, educational programs, public lectures and round-table discussions regarding social justice and diversity.

The Program Administrator must posses the ability to be creative and innovative, a willingness and talent to engage students, a broad knowledge of trends in programming on college campuses, experience in promotion and public relations strategies, and the ability to generate excitement about multicultural programs.  The work schedule will be developed around program demands and include evenings and weekends.   

Essential Functions:

Program/Event Collaboration and Planning (70% percent of time)

  • Coordinate and evaluate daytime, evening, and weekend campus-wide programs that promote diversity, inclusiveness, and cultural awareness.   Infuse cultural awareness programming in Johns Hopkins annual campus wide events (e.g., Fall Fest, Spring Fair, etc.) by collaborating with staff event coordinators and involving multicultural students leaders in implementing these programs.    Collaborate with staff from residence life, Levering and Nolan’s to offer multicultural programs in the residence halls and “mini” unions.
  • Advise student lead cultural month planning committees, providing guidance through leadership development, planning events, navigating campus polices, and reviewing budget and major purchases as needed.
  • Coordinate, implement and evaluate the OMAs annual Culture Show.  Identify, hire and procure services from needed external vendors.   Recruit, select and train up to 8 student staff to assist with all facets of the Show including group auditions, selection of acts, rehearsals, program development, advertising, technical support, etc.  Make program revisions, as appropriate, using evaluative feedback.   
  • Manage the Multicultural Programming Advisory Committee that reviews proposals from student organizations requesting financial support for diversity oriented events.  Managing the committee includes recruiting, selecting and training members as well as developing the grant application (including criteria for awards) and selection procedures.  
  • Manage (and revise as needed) the OMA student organization resident system. This includes advertising vacancies, recruiting/selecting/orienting residents and enforcing resident policies.
  • Advise the OMA General Council – a group consisting of leaders of the 14 multicultural student organizations that reside in Multicultural Student Center.  Advising efforts include leadership development, setting annual goals for the Council, planning and implementing collaborative programming at the MASC.  
  • Serves on cross-department committees and support programming efforts that align with the goals of the OMA and/or Homewood Student Affairs.
  • Work with the OMA staff, student organizations and Campus Programs offices to create an annual calendar of event.  Calendar must be completed by June of each year.
  • Creatively market programs and events via use of Social Media, flash Ads, text messages, and other electronic (non-electronic) means of advertising across campus.
  • Participate in ongoing education and professional development through local and national conferences and workshops.

Administrative Duties (30% percent of time)

  • Develop and monitor annual budgets including the multicultural programming grant account

($35,000 per year).

  • Develop systems to track event attendance and evaluate programs.   
  • Prepare written reports summarizing program evaluations, attendances and related trends.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Bachelor’s Degree required.  Enrollment in a Master’s graduate program in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling, or related area preferred.  


Related Work Experience:

Three years progressively responsible working experience planning events in a university setting and working with multicultural populations.    

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience planning and implementing events and working with college students from underrepresented populations (minorities, first generation or low income).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks, trouble shooting, collaborate with and manage others in planning events.
  • Ability to coordinate cultural, social and educational programs; and excellent organizational skills are required for this job.  
  • Excellent written, verbal and cross-cultural communication skills are a must.
  • Ability to be creative, attend to detail and manage multiple priorities/tasks.  Tech-savvy with proficiency with MS Office, social media and other web-based programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with multi-cultural populations and awareness of issues affecting women, minorities, and people with disabilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to excellent customer service

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
